My husband and I traveled down the West Coast on a road trip from Portland to Big Sur. I booked this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews and pictures on the hotel's website, and I am very glad I did. After a harrowing drive down the most twisty stretch of PCH in the rain and mist, The Westport Hotel was a perfect oasis of calm, elegance and beauty.
Set just across the street from the Pacific Coast, this 19th Century establishment has been meticulously restored and decorated. Everything is clean-lined and simple. Colors reference the sea and the coast --sandy tans, ocean blues, foam whites-- accented by rich, wood flooring and lots of windows.
Service is superb. The Old Abalone Pub was closed the night we arrived, so the hotel included a "weary travelers" package with our booking. As Westport is a tiny hamlet with no places to eat after seven o'clock, the only way to get dinner is to drive to Fort Bragg twenty miles down the road. After the aforementioned hellish drive, we didn't want to do that. And we didn't have to. Dorene and Lee, the proprietors, sat us down in the beautiful lounge and served up a feast of the freshest salad, most delicious chicken barley soup and amazing, homemade desserts we had on our trip (and we went to some pretty fancy places). The package also included beer and wine, much needed for these weary travelers.
Next morning was bright and beautiful. From the windows and deck of the Northwest Room, we had a vista of the Pacific: rocks, achingly blue ocean and, yes, grey whales frolicking just off the coast. Refreshed and well-rested, we were served not one, but two breakfasts: fresh scones, coffee and tea in the room, and delicious omelets when we made our way downstairs.
Everything at the Westport is done with five-star attention to detail and the kind of graciousness and enthusiasm that comes from people who love what they do. My only regret is that we did not have more time to stay at this wonderful gem. We'll make sure to stay longer next time and, hopefully, enjoy the pub as well!

Room Tip: Northwest for terrific view and deck!

To celebrate our 30th anniversary, my husband and I decided to return to the town of Westport on the Mendocino Coast where we spent our honeymoon all those years ago. This time around we stayed at the Westport Hotel which has been BEAUTIFULLY restored. This gem of a hotel has all the touches that makes a special occasion spot memorable. From the very first phone call to the hotel until we departed at the end of our stay, we felt very well take care of, with each person wanting to help make our celebration one we will always remember. The rooms are tastefully decorated and many have decks with ocean views (www.westporthotel.us). We certainly enjoyed sitting out on ours and watching the afternoon sun over the waves. There are other places to relax, such as the sauna or a lovely sitting room downstairs with fireplace or in the garden. We continued our celebrations in the hotel restaurant, The Old Abalone Pub, where we had a wonderful dinner with incredible sauces in a comfortable atmosphere. In the morning fresh coffee, scones and fruit were placed outside our door at a previously arranged time, followed by a breakfast downstairs later in the morning, both of which were included in the price of the room. I cannot say enough wonderful things about our stay at this hotel. Both my husband and I felt refreshed and renewed at the end of our stay. I know we will return.

We went for Sunday brunch. It is quite classy for the middle of nowhere. The food was delicious. I had crab cakes that came on a bed of arugula salad with figs and raspberries and nectarines. He had corned beef hash and eggs, and it was excellent as well! Really good champagne too! And an ocean view! I am looking forward to another sunny Sunday to go there again.

My wife and I had visited the redwoods in Humboldt Redwoods State Park one day, and started a drive down Highway 1 on the coast late in the afternoon. It was foggy, getting dark, we we were hungry and tired. So we stopped at an unassuming little place in the first town we encountered called the Westport Hotel and Abalone Pub. From the outside this seemed a tidy, popular local eatery. Once inside we discovered what a gem we had truly lucked upon - beautiful decor, 5 star cuisine, warm and friendly service that was equally professional. Live classical guitar through our meal, and an excellent wine list. Wandering about we discovered the guest accomodations of the inn to be equally enticing. The rooms seem almost a "how to" example for an interior design class, and although television is not available there is ample quietude and books for the guests. Cell phone service is sparse to nil, and there is no telephone in the rooms unfortunately. The bed was very comfortable, and the balcony offered a lovely view of the ocean and local coast. There is a dry sauna, which isn't my cup of tea but my lovely bride gave it a good review! We had to leave early in the morning, before the normal breakfast hour and our hosts provided us with freshly baked scones and coffee to fortify us for our drive back to Cloverdale along the beautiful coast and ever more redwoods along Rt 128.

We stopped in for a night on our San Fran to Seattle trip and absolutely loved the place. Staff was very friendly (one even knows a few epic poems by memory and will indulge you if requested). We had a great meal as well. It was one of our favorite places we stayed.

Driving by this place, you might think it's a cute place to stop for a beer (The Old Abalone Pub says the sign). Little would you realize there's a world class chef cooking creative cuisine that blends fresh organic ingredients in fresh new ways. VERY affordable (like $17 for a seafood risotto). The crab cakes over soba noodles with seaweed and cucumber aoli are to die for! Great beers on tap, homemade cakes and desserts, fresh salads, and even the bar food like burgers and sandwiches come w/a gourmet twist on sauces, side dishes, etc. We did not stay at the hotel.
