My husband and I traveled down the West Coast on a road trip from Portland to Big Sur. I booked this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews and pictures on the hotel's website, and I am very glad I did. After a harrowing drive down the most twisty stretch of PCH in the rain and mist, The Westport Hotel was a perfect oasis of calm, elegance and beauty.
Set just across the street from the Pacific Coast, this 19th Century establishment has been meticulously restored and decorated. Everything is clean-lined and simple. Colors reference the sea and the coast --sandy tans, ocean blues, foam whites-- accented by rich, wood flooring and lots of windows.
Service is superb. The Old Abalone Pub was closed the night we arrived, so the hotel included a "weary travelers" package with our booking. As Westport is a tiny hamlet with no places to eat after seven o'clock, the only way to get dinner is to drive to Fort Bragg twenty miles down the road. After the aforementioned hellish drive, we didn't want to do that. And we didn't have to. Dorene and Lee, the proprietors, sat us down in the beautiful lounge and served up a feast of the freshest salad, most delicious chicken barley soup and amazing, homemade desserts we had on our trip (and we went to some pretty fancy places). The package also included beer and wine, much needed for these weary travelers.
Next morning was bright and beautiful. From the windows and deck of the Northwest Room, we had a vista of the Pacific: rocks, achingly blue ocean and, yes, grey whales frolicking just off the coast. Refreshed and well-rested, we were served not one, but two breakfasts: fresh scones, coffee and tea in the room, and delicious omelets when we made our way downstairs.
Everything at the Westport is done with five-star attention to detail and the kind of graciousness and enthusiasm that comes from people who love what they do. My only regret is that we did not have more time to stay at this wonderful gem. We'll make sure to stay longer next time and, hopefully, enjoy the pub as well!
