The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills
Ranked #2 of 19 Hotels in West Hollywood

Reviewed November 3, 2009

We stayed at the London for two nights before our cruise out of the Port of Los Angeles. We have friends in the LA area and we wanted to stay in West Hollywood (and my husband likes boutique hotels) so he chose the London.

With some boutique hotels you never know what to expect, small rooms, stuck up staff, etc.. so i went with reservations. I was never disappointed.

We missed the hotel the first time we drove by it because it is very unassuming and nestled on the side. We valet parked our car since that was the only parking available. It was a bit expensive ($32.00) but they always had our car ready you just had to call down before you left your room and it was waiting.

We checked in at around 1pm but our room wasn't ready. So they gave us a key that accessed the pool on the roof and told us they would call us when it was ready. We instead opted to walk down Sunset Blvd and have lunch. On our way back to the hotel after lunch they called and said the room was ready, (it was about 2-2:30)

The bellman took our things and led us to the room. He was very helpful with suggestions for things to do and was very helpful. The room was gorgeous! Huge comfy bed with a lounge sectional in front of it. We also had a sliding glass door to a balcony that overlooked LA, beautiful. The bathroom was bigger than some bedrooms I've lived in with a separate two nozzeled shower and huge 2 person tub.

Lighting in the room was very effective. You could control all aspects of the lights to dim or just highlight the walls, it was perfect.

On the rooftop was the pool with cabanas and in another section a smallish gym. The gym wasn't that great so I didn't work out there. We did lounge by the pool both days and had lunch from the hotel's service. The kabobs were delicious and the salads very satifying.

The menu system on the TV was a bit clunky but it seemed to be what all the hotels in the area were using.

There was a minibar station in the room with a sink and several types of glasses so we could entertain in the room.

All in all it was a perfect start to our vacation and we would probably not stay anywhere else when we go back. It was very close to all the clubs on Santa Monica Blvd so you didn't even need to drive anywhere.

Booked this for location and based on other reviews and was very impressed! The rooms are huge and very cool. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The only downside was very expensive valet parking, but they did ensure it was out front fast. If you need to be in West Hollywood, I can't recommend anywhere else more highly.

We spent the last three nights of a two week holiday traveling around California at the London, and it really was the highlight of our trip. The room was large, with seating area, table chairs, small kitchen and an HD TV. everything is there to make your stay comfortable. The bathroom felt like a spa with huge tub and double shower, plenty of fluffy towels and toileteries. We had a room with an outside seating area, which unfortunately we couldn't enjoy because of the noise of the traffic outside. This noise was also a bit of a problem in the room at night due to the patio windows with only single glazing. I would have expected a hotel of this quality to have double glazing but this was our only niggle about the place. We booked bed and continental breakfast which we found to be delicious with good quality food, not ruined with sickly sauces etc. which you often find with American food. We can't comment on the restaurant food because when we looked at the menu there was nothing there for us as we are both vegetarians but we found plenty of places to eat nearby. We also found the staff extremely polite and helpful. By the time we arrived at the London we had taken the hire car back, but didn't find this a problem as we were able to use the on and off tour bus which picks up outside the hotel and taxis. Would definately recommend this hotel.

We stayed at the London West Hollywood in April of this year for 4 nights. We bought the bed and breakfast package, with just the standard room. Our experience was perfect. We loved our room, we could see the Whiskey from our verandah. The “anything off the menu” breakfasts were divine. The concierge team were the most helpful we’ve ever come across – we felt like we harassed them non stop for assistance on a variety of issues, everything from printing our Disneyland tickets or directions for walking to shops. We were made to feel like important guests everyday from all staff – front desk, managers, concierge, bellboys, town car driver, dining staff. They even let us stay till 8pm on our last day due to our flight not departing LAX till 11:30pm.

So naturally when I booked a holiday for my fiancé, I naturally said that he should stay at the London West Hollywood again, because it was such a great experience the first time. So we booked the same bed and breakfast deal, with the same kind of room.

We informed the hotel that he would need early check in & late checkout, which we required last time and was not a problem.

So, on Monday, when my fiancé arrived at the hotel at 12noon, he was informed that his room would not be available. They offered to lock away his luggage, and took his mobile number and they said they’ll call him as soon as it was ready (no big deal, all travelers have had to do this at one time or another). Luckily, my fiancé had a friend who could take him out for lunch and to look at some shops to kill some time. My fiancé proceeded to call at 3pm & 5pm – still no room available. He then called at 7pm. Still no room available. At 8pm, he arrived back at the hotel, room still not available – the staff member at the front desk, made him repeat what he was saying 3 times, claiming he could not understand him (we are Australian and speak perfect English). At 9pm, they finally offered him a room, 9 hours after his original checkin attempt and 6 hours after their official checkin time. After checking in at the desk, he walked towards the lift and was then question by 5 security guards what he was doing & was he a guest of the hotel in a rude, abrupt manner – he replied of course, why would he be trying to use the lifts if he wasn’t a guest?? So it was 9:30pm before he was settled into his room – a long day when you’ve arrived in LA at 6am. Not a great first impression – and not all the channels & the ppv movies didn’t work on the television in the room, he informed front desk who assured a technician would come up and fix it. This day was wasted, nothing could be done.

The next morning, my fiancé got up, took his breakfast voucher down to the restaurant. Initially the staff member told the same routine as our last stay, to pick what he wanted from the menu. While my fiancé was trying to decide, she came back over and said, Oh, I’m sorry, our breakfast format has changed. “Our Boxwood continental breakfast is included in your price, however, you can access a la carte items at a reduced price.” My fiancé went over to the “buffet” – which consisted of pastries, apples and oranges. Not even toast or cereal. Huh? This wasn’t what we paid for and were never informed that the breakfast has changed. In the bed & breakfast package, breakfast works out to be approximately $US45, I don’t know of any pastries, apples or oranges that cost that much. So my fiancé left, without breakfast and bought it out.

When he returned to the hotel later than afternoon, he approached one of the duty managers about the change in breakfast & that his television still hadn’t been fixed. The duty manager apoligised, explained that apparently the menu for breakfast changed a week earlier, however they didn’t bother to tell any customers who had booked previously, offered a bottle of red wine, to give him a complimentary hot breakfast, to send up a technician & gave the half day/late checkout for free. The bottle of wine took 90 mins to arrived, technician never came. I also called the duty manager, to express my upset over the situation – I would expect better treatment of guests from a 5 star hotel, and a hotel that is supposedly the no. 1 rated in West Hollywood.

The next morning, my fiancé went down for breakfast – still no hot breakfast. Dining staff rudely said they were separate to the hotel and that what the hotel says does not have to be honoured by them. When my fiancé approached the duty manager, again, he was met by a different, very rude one who basically said, “We’ve done a lot for you, what more do you expect?” This was the last straw. So, my fiancé found a 2 bedroom penthouse suite in downtown LA, for half the price per night, including hot breakfast, wif. He checked out today, Wednesday morning, and has refused to pay any cancellation fees especially when 2 days of his 3 have been wasted addressing problems with the hotel & its incompetent staff. Oh yeah, and he toilet blocked and flooded the entire bathroom.

This hotel almost got over $US2000 from us, but they stuffed it for themselves. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I will never stay there again and will make sure every hotel review website is aware of this fact. It is pathetic that a hotel that is so new could turn bad so quickly and it does not bode well for the longevity of this business. The hotel staff need a hard lesson in customer service and need to stop thinking because they work there, that they are more important than their guests.

Took a quick trip to LA to visit some friends and for some R&R before starting a new job. My boyfriend originally wanted to stay at the Roosevelt, but after reading some reviews, I pushed for the London. It was SO the right choice.

First off all, they offer free wireless, which is refreshing as so many placed rip you off with that. The valet parking is pricey, yes, but worth it.

The lobby is BEAUTIFUL. Bright and elegant without being stuffy.

The service was marvelous across the board. Completely attentive and friendly without being overly intrusive. On two occasions, we left items in our car, and after calling the front desk, the valet folks retrieved them and they were promptly delivered to our door with a smile. Check-in/check-out was seamless, valet folks were always fast and super-friendly, and we generally felt really welcome and taken care of.

Room service breakfast was not only quick, but delicious and presented beautifully. Eggs florentine and the full English breakfast...seriously good. Service and food up by the pool were equally as good (mixed green salad with seared tuna...absolutely perfect!)

Ah, the pool...not the biggest pool in the world, but perfectly lovely. The area is impeccably clean and well-maintained, and during the afternoon hours we spent up there, there were pitchers of lemon water, pink lemonade, and baskets of fresh fruit for the taking. The whole rooftop is pretty sweet...an illuminated waterfall, firepits, and comfy couches make it a fun cocktail spot at night. The view is really fantastic. There is a small but well-appointed fitness center on the roof as well, where I had a great workout. My only complaint is that the the bar closes too early up there...i tried to get a post-dinner drink on a Friday night around 11pm, and the bar was already done.

The room itself was huge for a standard room, with a sitting area and table & chairs. Decor is kind of Danish mid-century, which I loved. Bed=totally comfy. Huge flat screen tv, ipod dock/alarm clock, even a little tic-tac-toe board were all great touches to the room. The have made great use of space by using the headboard as a sort of room divider that had benches and a vanity built onto the back by the closets. Closet space was very decent and included roomy drawers, a mini ironing board, iron, and a safe. We had a small balcony that was peaceful and seemed private although it overlooked an outdoor walkway on the third floor. They basically covered it in shrubbery which smelled and looked beautiful, and we had just enough of a view of the hills.

The bathrooms. Are. Awesome. Huge, multiple full-length mirrors, deep soaking tub, and two person walk-in shower with a rainfall shower head. Products provided were great, the two bathrobes were gorgeous, and the towels were fluffy. I want to LIVE in this bathroom!

The hotel seemed quiet, so I'm not sure if they were full, but I get the sense that it is a more low-key place to stay even at capacity, which was completely what we were looking for. The area is quiet, but right off the Sunset Strip and close to Santa Monica Blvd, so it's just a short walk or drive to restaurants and shopping. Traffic is hideous in LA, pretty much at all times, so you have to allow tones of time to get anywhere. But if you want to stay local, there is plenty to see and do. We had brunch at the Chateau Marmont (a five minute drive) which was fantastic and funny...douche-bag sightings galore!

Overall, it was a near-perfect hotel experience, and we are both hotel snobs. The level of service and quality for the price is unbeatable. We are already talking about going back. We never got to eat or have tea at the Gordon Ramsey restaurant, so...next time!

Wow... What a great hotel.

* Great design, spacious rooms and public areas.
* Amazing view of LA.
* We booked a Crown Suite and were offered the choice of 3 different rooms upon checkin that we were shown and got to choose from. We didn't ask for this but were offered the choice.
* Not all Crown Suites have a tub, so make sure you ask.
* If you have the choice ask for room 707, 807 or 907. Great room, corner with extra windows and you will love the view.
* Excellent house car service.
* Friendly and helpful staff
* Very, very clean rooms and public areas.
* Breakfast service is on the slow side. Still waiting on that cappuccino.
* Also prepare to wait a bit for your cocktails from the bar. And they are not always the same. The signature cocktail is "The London". We got it with sugar on the glass one day and salt the other.
* The Gordon Ramsay restaurant is superb. Great chefs tasting menu and excellent service from waiter and sommelier.
* The new Boxwood Cafe provides a good informal dining alternative.
* Great cooking class in the kitchen by chef de cuisine Andy Cook.
* Fun rooftop
* OK gym, but can't compare to the gym at The London NYC.
* Free wifi.

You will love The London West Hollywood.

Stayed 3 nights at the end of September, as part of our fly drive in Southern California. Booked direct with the hotel website & got a fair deal. The rooms are a great size. All the London Suite rooms have a balcony & ours had a view of Sunset Boulevard. Comfortable bed, great lounging sofa & LCD TV make the room nice enough to chill out in when you aren’t dashing around LA. The bathroom has the wow factor! Floor to ceiling tiled a huge deep soaking tub & a twin head rainfall shower plus gorgeous amenities. Another good feature is the light switch – stumble into the bathroom in the dark of the night, and the light comes on, so no walking into the wall! The minibar & treat box are expensive, but this is to be expected – find me one that isn’t these days!
The rooftop pool is compact but was quiet when we were there, so no problem finding somewhere to lounge around. The gym has state of the art equipment. The fire pits at night are fun & the waterfall feature is illuminated so creates a nice ambience. Complimentary coffee & pastries are served by the pool in the morning.
The interiors of the hotel are stylish & give the London the luxury upscale vibe. Check in was swift & everyone was really friendly. No sooner we arrived in our room, we were sent a bottle of champagne, a box of chocs & a little red London bus. Having told the hotel it was our 10th wedding anniversary, this was a really sweet touch.
The only gripes we had were the parking & room service. Parking is valet only & is $32 a night. With no other parking option, you need to factor this into your budget. Maybe it would be better if they absorbed this into the room price - not sure really. We had room service on our last night & it was awful! A soggy limp steak sandwich & fries so salty, they were inedible. We complained about it & the charge was removed from our final bill, so I guess our complaint was resolved in some way. I did also receive an email from the room service manager on return to the UK, to which I have replied. They state that the room service food is the same as that which comes from the Gordon Ramsay restaurant. In which case, not exactly a good recommendation to dine in the restaurant (we didn’t)
All in all, I felt the London was a good choice & represented reasonably good value. We had a car, so drove all over LA. It’s situated just off Sunset Boulevard, so plenty of places to shop, eat & sightsee. Get a good online deal and this hotel will make you smile.
