We stayed there for two nights in April. The front desk was warm and welcoming. Our room wasn't ready so we had a drink up on the rooftop bar. It is very hip and mod. A glass of entry level chardonnay was 12.00! Be prepared to cough up some bucks for cocktails. The server didn't know what wines they were serving but came back and recited them. All the waitstaff appears to be in the 20's. Very polite.

Our room was a king bed and it was really state of the art and beautiful. Thoughtful too, wine pull, good glasses, internet, not alot of luggage space, but a lovely desk and plasma tv and big bed. some road noise and we were near the entrance and exit of the hotel and bar/restaurant and it was loud at 1am.

I would ask for a room away from that area. I'm sure they would accommodate if they can.
The location was fun, in old town and lots of restaurants and nightlife.

The hotel itself has a Japanese style restaurant bar and a wine bar off the other side of the hotel. We didn't try those, so can't comment but looked nice.

Would I return? It's a very nice place, but maybe too hip for me.

My husband and I stayed at the ANdaz for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon road trip in the US. It was our first time in Los Angeles, and when we arrived there we had just driven down from San Francisco so we were understandably very tired (and overwhelmed by the bright lights of Hollywood!) when we arrived at about 10pm.

We used the valet parking the whole time and were very happy with the service. As soon as we pulled up and handed over the keys, we were led inside and met by a staff member in the hotel lobby, who then proceeded to check us in using his iPad. He offered us a complimentary drink which was nice but we just opted for water (very un-Hollywood!). He chatted with us and was quite friendly, we told him we were on our honeymoon but he didn't upgrade us or offer us any champagne etc. (This was our experience in all the hotels we stayed in, we were always really nice to check in staff too!). He gave us our key card and then left us to drag our weary selves and our heavy baggage to our room.

Everywhere else we stayed had offered the services of a bell hop so we were quite surprised by no offer, especially given the fact that we had said where we'd just come from and were both obviously extremely exhausted. We found our way to the room and it was nice enough, it had a view of the car park which was a little disappointing but apparently was on the 'quiet side'. Maybe it would have been if it hadn't have had the lift shaft directly behind it. Understandably a lot of people come here to party which is to be expected, but it did mean the lift was going up and down through the wee hours, slightly annoying to say the least. The ear plugs did help slightly and the bed was nice and comfy. If we had been staying there longer and we hadn't been so tired that first night I probably would have requested a different room.

The plus side of the room was the complimentary soft drinks and snacks, which we took full advantage of. Wi-fi is also complimentary, although I couldn't get it to work on my mobile, but it wasn't the only hotel I experienced that issue at.

The shower was lovely and big (walk-in style) however we did find the shower head easily slipped out of its holder, and when it was in the holder it did tend to spray beyond the glass screen - looked trendy but slightly impractical, which was the general impression we got from the hotel.

To operate the lifts you have to swipe your room card over a sensor (bit like an Oyster card) and then press the level you want. Nobody thought to mention this to us at any point during check-in, so on our first day of exploration we were going up and down in the lift (along with another equally befuddled guest!) - until somebody got in and made it work for us! It would have been helpful to have been told how to work it in the first place...

During our stay we booked an excursion for the next stop on our trip. Our rep faxed through the details to the hotel. When we were coming back after a day out we enquired as to whether they had received the fax (after we stood around awkwardly waiting for one of the trendy staff members to notice us). Because there is no front desk it seems that there is no single point for things like this to be received. The chap could not find any thing, even though our rep was positive she'd sent it. Eventually it got to us the next morning when the rep faxed it through again and then phoned and got the staff to stand by the fax machine so it would be picked up, then my husband ran down to collect it straight away so it didn't go missing!

This was our least favourite stop on our trip, but we did experience stays in some wonderfully hospitable (in the traditional style) hotels so perhaps we would have appreciated it more if it we didn't have anything to compare it to. Great for groups of friends (especially the rock star sorts) but not so good for a young British couple (we're both under 30) who are used to experiencing a more personal, traditional service.

Room Tip: Don't have a room next to the lift shaft over a weekend!

This was the last hotel we stayed in on our visit to LA! The main reason we chose the Andaz was because we had stayed here twice before when it was the Hyatt on sunset and always had a great stay! Having read previous mixed reviews I was having second thoughts but decided to give it a try anyway. Upon arrival we were offered a cold drink while we checked in. We had booked a 2 queen view and requested a high floor because previous reviews had said it can be very noisy on the lower floors. Our room wasn't ready but we arrived at noon so expected that, we were told they would put a rush on housekeeping and took my number and said they would call when it was ready! We went for lunch and had a walk along Santa Monica blvd but after 2 hours and 95 degree heat we decided to head back. Room was still not ready so we just sat in the lobby and again we were offered cold drinks. 30 minutes passed and still no room, we watched others arrive and were checked in immediately! Then a guy called Dean approached us and said he was the assistant guest experience manager and asked if he could help! Within minutes he had us checked in on the 12th floor with a great view! What a lovely guy he was and he is an asset to the hotel. The room was lovely and clean and the view from the sun room is fab! Beds very comfy and had 2 great nights sleep! Will definitely return again because we love the history behind this hotel and the location is the best in LA in our opinion! Once again thankyou Dean for a great room and a fab stay.

OK the location is great, conveniently located in one of my favourite parts of LA. The room was a really good size (King View Room) - spacious and modern. Our package included complimentary breakfast which was consistently OK. The rooftop was pretty cool but given the heat, it was regularly packed out with other guests. The gym here was excellent.

The big downside (and I know others have said it, and I've read to hotel's responses, but still) is parking. You must have a car to properly experience LA and there are NO options for overnight parking anywhere in this area except to valet park with Andaz at $32 per day. All on-street / meter parking in the entire area (I'd say a 1mile radius) switches to tow-zones at like, 2am. You may as well add the $32 Andaz parking cost to establish the real cost of every night's accommodation. Coupled with tips for valet and the waitstaff at the 'complimentary' breakfast (which includes a self-serve buffet), you're looking at least another $50 per day.

These added costs push Andaz into much higher price territory, where it becomes a question of "is the area really worth it if I've got a car to get around anyway?"... I don't think it is.

From the minute we arrived everything was perfect. The hotel is gorgeous and modern, the service is amazing and the staff were polite and helpful. We couldn't have asked for better from a hotel. The hotel restaurant served the most exquisite food and the cocktails in the bar were fabulous. We would definitely visit this hotel again.
