They initially put us in the wrong room which was good because now I know that it wasn't just our room that was run down and stinky! It was like an old, cheap motel trying to be cool. It's a great place to stay on the weekend for the convenience factor (not having to drive to go out, staying on the strip, lots of people partying) but don't expect quality. The diner had decent food but a nasty waiter.

We stayed here after an awesome stay at the Avalon in Beverly Hills. Coming from the Avalon, the Standard Sunset was a big disappointment. It's cool to come to for the lounges and bar - but for that only.

We had the "XL" room, the second to nicest room they offer. Regardless, the rooms are very old and run down. Poor quality materials are used, carpets need replaced, old plumbing, etc.... Also, ALL rooms in this hotel are smoking - non-smoking rooms are not offered. Elevator was ALWAYS extremely HOT and it too seemed very old. Only good thing about our room was our view which overlooked the pool and city.

Will never stay here again, but might consider the Standard downtown. However, I HIGHLY reccomend the AVALON in Beverly Hills. We stayed there for the first part of our trip and everything was dead on perfect.

If you are young, hip (or wanna be) want to stay somewhere near where it's all happening - this could be the place. It is NOT cheap, but then again it's not that expensive either. Rooms are spacious, staff are friendly & helpful although a little pretentious. If you want somewhere quiet & romantic forget it & on our return from some clubbing on the strip we found our hotel to be even busier at 3am with slightly wasted fashion types staggering around outside the foyer! To summarise - if you want somewhere where you can safely park you car, that looks nice, in a good location & you like to party - check yourself in!

Slap a cool color of paint on the wall, go to Ikea to buy furniture and that pretty much sums up The Standard. A trendy Motel 6 at best. My bet is Motel 6 at least has a chair in the room instead of a bean bag chair. LA can keep this gem all to themselves.

I blame myself for booking this plywood palace but I should share the experience either way. Coming from New York City, where everything is also stylized, it was cool upon entry to see the chick in the glass box pretending to read and the funky staff hanging out pretending to work. Everyone told us that it has a great bar and restaurant, and that is true, especially the breakfast. But boy, take that elevator upstairs and you'll be in for a real treat. Everything stinks from a perfect combination of urine and mold that never goes away. All rooms are smoking, don't let them tell you differently. The rooms are intentionally minimalist 1960s/1970s decor and that worked well with the surroundings. The problem is the walls are as thin as paper and you can hear EVERYTHING that is going on around you. Your only chance for survival in this place is if your neighbors aren't partying all night long. I would say in general you will have about a 10% chance to sleep. If you're 25 or under and don't have any business meetings while you're in town, it's perfect! It's also perfect for people who are broke and love to pile 10-20 people from their indy film into the room and the pool. My wife and I were lying in bed until 7:00 in the morning wondering when our --- neighbor was going to stop having phone --- with her boyfriend and we had been calling the front desk all night long and banging on the wall. They were kind enough not to charge us for the nightmare night and apologized emphatically, but it was too late. the guy at the front desk also got me a room at another hotel for a good rate. Are we having fun yet? Needless to say, i will never set foot anywhere near this place again, actually... maybe I'll meet someone there for breakfast after an all nighter.

We stayed here during Emmy's. Lots of B/C listers and people that want to be on any list, so that is ALWAYS fun to watch. Everyone is good looking- and the people watching became a sport to us. I am convinced that everyone in Hollyweird is self medicated. People were falling all over the place. I wished I'd had my camera!

Anyhow- let's get to the rooms and amenities. We had booked an "extra large 'cause size matters" room and it was pretty big. We couldn't get the sofa to fold out into an extra bed (we had 3 people) and no one came up to help after we called twice.

The furnishings are lower than ikea quality. No shower pressure or exhaust fan in bathroom. It's an old hotel that, to me, the owner came in and put a bandaid on, flipped the sign upside down and did some trendy cosmetics to make it look like a hip place to stay- which it is. If you can buck up to the fact that you are paying for the scene and not the rooms, you'll be fine. If rooms and scene matter...maybe stay at Mondrian for the extra $75 per night. Much better.

We had booked the Standard Hotel in Hollywood and then later read the reviews and were nervous about what we would find. Relax. It was a great time and a great hotel. It just depends what it is that you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a quiet/family type of hotel this isn’t really the place for that. However, if you’re looking for a cool place to hang out, grab some drinks, and have fun then this is more up your alley. The noise level wasn’t out of control at all and we were on the side of Sunset. The people there were fine too. No one seemed rude or bothered by any questions that you have. They actually let us check out at 4pm instead of 2pm since we had a later flight. Good time all around.
