“Great spot for picnic by river, look around, stagecoach ride (fee for ride)”

Pioneer Yosemite History Center

We happened upon this area on our return from Mariposa Grove (MG needs a longer time than you might think..I will try to add another review about that). Beautiful river w/picnic tables (may not be free right away, but most people are not lingering, so just wait...same w/parking). After a picnic lunch, we walked around the Pioneer History Center; old houses, a stagecoach display (about 10 antique stagecoaches), a barn w/horses and donkeys, a blacksmith, and stagecoache rides over a covered bridge. The ride was about 10 minutes long (the first reservation we could get was a 20 minute wait - time to look around and come back - did not have to wait in line). Price for stagecoach was right at $4 per adult, $3 per child 12 and under. For my group (adults, teenagers, middle school, elementary, and toddler), 1 hour was plenty here, including the stagecoarch ride. (This was the only cost). Walking around the buildings is free. Our driver was very pleasant and allowed time for pictures afterwards. THere is a general store within walking distance to purchase food, etc. I don't feel this stop is a "must see," but a pleasant way to spend time if you have it.

Very short walking distance from the Wawona Hotel & gift shop, this center has a display of old stage coaches, a classic old covered bridge, a town (operated by volunteers in the summer) but most of all it just "smells" of the history of early settlers... it's quaint. You could probably see the whole place and even dawdle in 30 minutes - the charm alone is worth the stop.

We stopped by the Wawona Hotel but visited the History Museum located on the grounds. There are several cabins outfitted as they would have in the 1800's. There is a stagecoach ride - 10 minutes or so. When we visited, the blacksmith shop was open with a volunteer showing what the blacksmith would be doing on a typical day. The Wells Fargo office was open and Julie was dressed ready to tell a story about the office and what would be happening on a typical day there also. Tickets (donations) are sold for the Stagecoach Ride at the Wells Fargo Office but you'll need to get there early to get a seat! All three volunteers were full of stories and entertaining facts about their 1800's professions.

Back in the '50s the National Park service was more focused on natural things than they were on the human history of a park. Fortunately things began to change and they did before the many historical buildings scattered around Yosemite were destroyed.
The Pioneer History Center is the result. A wonderful collection of the most important early buildings to be built in the park, and they are located in Wawona right next to the historic covered bridge.
