Tender Greens is a welcome addition to the Walnut Creek downtown. The food is fresh, tasty and not overdone. Surrounded by high-priced restaurants, this is a sparkling jewel and you know the meal will be consistently fresh.

“Very good for this kind of restaurant”
Reviewed July 28, 2012

Walnut Creek needs more restaurants like this because Tender Greens provides good food that's relatively inexpensive. They have nice, tasty entree size salads, good specials, and good mint green ice tea. The desserts look appealing, but I haven't tried them yet. It's a good place to stop by when you're shopping downtown or running errands.

You order at the counter and bring your food to your table. The up side to this is that you can have a substantial lunch for less than 20 bucks, which I find difficult to find in Walnut Creek unless all you want is a sandwich.

“Fresh and Wonderful salads”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

A great place to have a satisfying and fresh salad. Easy parking in the garage next door which avoids the Walnut Creek meters. A perfect lunch spot

“An almost great place to eat”
Reviewed June 24, 2012

This is a place that could have a lot going for it, but somehow it just hasn't all come together yet for a really satisfying experience.

When you arrive you are guided to a counter where you order from a menu posted on the wall. This would be more than fine, except that the menu is so poorly designed.Truthfully, one could get a complex with regards to it; I kid you not! I went there 3 times in quick succession, and only then did I start to feel that ok, I can get the hang of this! More often than not, there is a bottleneck at the menu site with people standing there trying to make sense of it.

This is more than unfortunate, as that initial confusion greatly diminishes one's first impression. If the menu issue were the only problem, Tender Greens might be able to still be viewed in a favorable light. But, after you move beyond ordering, you end up waiting in a line, cafeteria style, to get to where you order your drinks and pay.

The drink orders slow the process down considerably, so that you find yourself standing in a really slow moving line which just isn't very satisying when you are hungry and/or tired and just want to get your food and sit down and eat. On top of that, the cashiers just are not that great at making eye contact or handing you your receipt which necessitates more time taken up trying to locate it. Also, the trays that one must carry their food to their table in are heavy and really uncomfortable to hold.

Once you sit down, you find that you have no silverware, no napkins, no straws, and no salt or pepper. All of these are found just beyond the cashiers who really should tell you that you need to grab what you might want. The system relies on your happening to notice or to know in advance that they're there, which is just not good enough. Once you've gotten through the line to pay, you just want to sit down already and eat.

If you can get past the negatives, you will find the positives at Tender Greens are many. There are many choices and variations avaiable so that one could feel that their order is tailor made. Also, there is a good selection available of obviously fresh and wholesome food.Their food is definitely good, their salads are fantastic, their portions are generous, and their prices are very reasonable. You will leave with your stomach satisfied almost certainly.

The desserts, well, it's dangerous territory for sure! There is always a varied and tantalizing selection, so beware! I have only sampled a few, but everything I've had has been as good as it looked! I believe that they have their own dessert person on staff.

All in all the experience at Tender Greens is a completely mixed bag. I feel that in general, people are patient and forgiving, and you'll see all of us politely waiting to get our food. I really think that this place could be so much more than it is and I would love to see some changes addressing some of the issues mentioned. There is no reason why the suggestion to eat at Tender Greens is met with pause rather than complete enthusiasm; it shouldn't be an 'almost great place to eat'.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed May 30, 2012

I've been there three times. The restaurant has some strengths and weaknesses. On the positive side, the ingredients seem very fresh, the bread for sandwiches is excellent and the dining room is pleasant. The prices aren't bad. I'm guessing that its possible to have a very good experience here.

So why have I been disappointed every time?

1. The menu is a blackboard and it's confusing. It also lacks detail about how the food is prepared. If you order something, you'd be wise to inquire exactly how it is prepared.

2. You stand on line and then order at a counter. I have yet to have any of the counter people seem anything better than stand-offish.

3. You then walk along the trail until you get to the registers. They set out trays with your name on it, waiting to be filled as the food is prepared. You order drinks, desserts and pay there. If the party ahead of you is having trouble selecting their drinks, you just stand there on line. It can take a while. This system seems unnecessary and other restaurants seem to abandon it in favor of giving you a number on a little stand and having the staff bring you your order. Or, they call a number on a loudspeaker. But, they don't usually try to maximize the time you're spending standing on line.

4. I had salt and pepper chicken. It came slathered in mayonnaise. The chicken seemed to be cut up at random -- some white meat, some other meat, some gristle, some skin. Parts were inedible. The salad was big lettuce leaves slathered in caesar dressing. I had to cut up the lettuce. There was nothing else in the salad. Unimpressive.

5. Other times the food has been a little better than that, but somehow leaves me cold.
