I love this restaurant and have been there for both dinner and lunch and can recommend it highly. Great food and fantastic wine list both by the glass and by the bottle.

Cypress is a happening place in Walnut Creek. The owner, Ricky, used to be an influence at the popular classic French restaurant, Le Virage, that closed a few years back. He’s effectively combined the fine French gastronomic sensibilities with a movable modern mood creating a delectable, hip, dining experience. The atmosphere is electric with young twenty-thirty something’s bantering at the bar and a piano man playing tunes showcasing several decades. No matter what your age, the establishment is welcoming and pleasing to the palate. The menu boasted several items prepared at the table-flambé, tossed Caesar Salads, etc. as well as updated entrees of rabbit, duck, monkfish, and crevettes. The beet salad and a side of truffled frites are not to be missed. The service is polite and impeccable; prices on par with other restaurants with excellent food and service. We had a birthday in the group and our very attentive waiter delivered a complimentary slice of chocolate cake voted the best in the area served with berries on a beautiful tray highlighted with a lit candle. Cypress is upbeat, upscale, and a definite positive addition to the East Bay culinary scene. Looking forward to a return visit to order the tableside preparations…and of course, another serving of canard.

A fairly new restaurant that is owned & operated by a long time local chef (La Virage fame) who has found new life, and possibly the fun and financing, in getting back into the restaurant game and opening his version of a modern French bistro . For the fans of La Virage, this should be a go-to-spot for hanging out and enjoying his spot-on food and drink. For those who aren't familiar with that iconic WC restaurant of yesteryear--why are you waiting? Grab a seat and enjoy the culinary ride.

Cypress was packed the Saturday night we strode inside, so we nimbally and quickly grabbed two bar seats. Quite the buzz around the bar that spilled into the open dining area. It was supported by the piano man who did an impressive job of keeping the 60--80s tunes rolling. Bar man was a bit buried at first and a little "cool", but he did come around and made a classic cocktail to my liking and handed over the uber-cool, new wave wine I-pads for R & D of their list and BTG offerings (Kudos to the wine software developers and to Apple/Jobs for making tech so much damn fun to play with).

Kept if somewhat light on the food scene. Went full on bistro-chic with the Oignon Soup (BEST!), Salad Frissee (Tarbender split the dish without a special request = Gold Star!), and of course, dialed into the fresh Huitres de Jour (12 / $20 = Value!). Washed all the above down with reasonably priced CA Chardonnay and French Chablis. Yes, Mr. Jagger, you can get Satisfaction!

Out the door, including adult beverages, for $80!!! Will be back with friends and family as this was a spur of the moment outing to a location we had no idea what to expect--and they delivered all the goods beyond expectations.

Long-time Walnut Creek residents recall Le Virage, in the 1970-80s a paragon of fine dining in San Francisco's East Bay. Not surprisingly since some of the same principals now operate Cypress, the dining experience at Cypress is Le Virage revived, from the oysters Rockefeller to the baked Alaska. But the day of table-side preparation has passed and its novelty doesn't carry well into the post-modern era. Plus I am capable and prefer to swirl my own glass to aerate the wine before tasting -- the server's extended aeration of my glass annoyed me. He was very pleasant and very kind -- but annoying. He did the same thing with the electronic wine list -- a cool device and I appreciated being shown how to use it, but come on, give me a chance. We enjoyed our dinner; the food was good but rather unremarkable -- not, as I had hoped, among the best in town.
