“Perfect for Legoland Weekends”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

This is where we stay when we take our mini vacations to Legoland. It's by no means a 5 star hotel, but the rates are super, it's clean, friendly staff, and close to Legoland. We have stayed at many hotel in the area and we have found this to be our favorite, simply because of the price and cleanliness of it. We would rather spend our money at Legoland on our kids then on a fancy hotel. If you are on a budget and want a good place to stay...this is it.

We decided to take a risk and stay here this past weekend because all of the other local hotels were booked. We had to be up and out early and didn't know what the traffic would be so we wanted to be close by to where we needed to be. Anyways, we checked in with our daughter, two sons, and two of their friends around 10:30PM and lone and behold my daughter went to throw something out and in the trash can was a opened box of condoms and open wrappers...not what I would expect in a "cleaned" hotel room. We noticed that one of the beds had a body indention on the made bed. Went down to the reception desk and was told this must have been overlooked. Because it was so late, we decided to take the room move, which ended up being what they thought should be compensation. So if you decide to stay here, stay in room 101. This room doesn't have the stain infested carpet and actually was what their pictures of the rooms look like on their website. I usually don't do reviews, but I thought this was absolutely nasty and was a horrible experience for out kids and thier friends.

Reasons to stay here, 1) Save some cash, rates are low versus most hotels in area, 2) Spacious rooms, 3) Our King Bed was very good, 4) Provided breakfast not deluxe but helps save money, 5) Quiet at night, did not hear other guests through walls, near freeway but freeway noise not a problem, 6) Nice pool area including soothing whirlpool tub, 7) Air conditioning was quiet and worked very well, 8) Neighborhood seems safe. ...........

Reasons you might not like it, 1) Bed pillows were awful, 2) Room walls had various scrapes and dents, 3) One of the table chairs in our room was heavily stained and quite disgusting, see photo, 4) One of the front desk staff borderline rude [daughter-in-law of owner, I think], 5) TV small and rather old, 6) Bath towels were on the verge of being sandpaper, 7) Wireless internet was crap, 8) Shower head low on wall, might have to get on knees to wash hair if you are very tall, 9) Most furniture in pool area cracked and in need of replacement ...........

Other comments, 1) Super location in greater north San Diego area. Quick to get to Carlsbad, Oceanside or desert landscape to east. Almost all of the moderately priced hotels in Carlsbad or Oceanside are located on busy roads, glad we stayed where we did. 2) Plenty of grocery stores, other shopping, and restaurants a short drive from hotel.

The location off the 78 is very convenient. Good size rooms at a reasonable rate. Staff was helpful when necessary and rooms were cleaned properly. A light breakfast was provided near the office with inside and outside seating.

We made our reservation through www.americasbestvalueinn.com where we entered three adults, eight children in two rooms. We were quoted a price and made the reservation, opting to prepay. The confirmation page indicated 2 adults and 8 children in two rooms, we printed this out.

At check-in were were told that no matter what the reservation said, the price quoted was for 2 people per room, all additional persons regardless of age are $10 each per night. This nearly doubled the price of the stay and made the inn more expensive than the Carlsbad Hampton just a couple miles away. Let me say this clearly, we would not have made the reservation if this was disclosed up front. Since then I have scoured the reservation web site and there is absolutely zero indication of this anywhere.

One of the rooms we were assigned smelled quite strongly of an orange chemical cleaner, the other room had no A/C, it was broken. Being that it was 10pm on a Saturday night in early August and the inn was full there was nothing to be done except lie on the bed and sweat.

There were cigarette burns in the sheets and blankets, in all four beds.

In the morning we went to the breakfast. Since the room AC units dump the condensate directly on walkway outside the rooms, my youngest had great fun splashing in all the algae lined puddles on the way to the breakfast room.

At the breakfast room there is a sign in the breakfast room "Only one waffle per registered guest." A woman runs the waffle iron and does not permit guests to touch it. The rest of the breakfast is a sugary pre-packaged carbohydrate only affair. This is exactly the wrong kind of food to eat on vacation to Legoland - thirty minutes later the kids are crashing and whiny.

If the price is the only consideration, this may be the motel for you.

Room Tip: Lower floors are cooler when the AC is broken.

One must understand that these are basic properties. That being said, we were more than pleased with our stay. The rooms have laminate flooring, which was a great improvement over the dirty carpets of some of our stays. At first I thought we had not soap or shampoo, but they are in dispensers on the wall and in the bathtub (we encountered this in the UK, and thought it was a great idea). Breakfast was pretty basic, with hot waffles, bagels and toast. There is a washer and dryer on site, which was handy. The property was well maintained, the rooms clean, and the front desk personnel friendly. We did not try the pool, but it looked clean.

We stayed 3 nights here, using 2 rooms while visiting Legoland. Our rooms were VERY clean. We enjoyed the quiet nights and the great air condition as well. We did take advantage of the breakfast which was nice and we were traveling with our grand children which took advantage of the swimming pool. I really liked the fact that the floor did NOT have carpet which is so nasty and carry's many germs...... we will certainly return.

Room Tip: we asked for two rooms together and was accommodated :)
