Whom ever the new owners are, everything went downhill, not the same quality of food.

I always heard good things about this place, and most people I knew they said this place was good, so I decided to go and I will be honest, I was not impress, this place is very plain, and I did notice something, people like it cuz most people that goes know each other, so it's more like eating among friends, of course I was an outcast there, but for people who is planning to go, if you like average food like red lobster or olive garden, then yes this place is for you. If you like new items, better taste in foods and something different, don't go here.

Our company had its Christmas party at The Depot. First of all, they sat us in a way that we could not talk to each other. Everyone who ordered steaks or prime rib either got them undercooked or overcooked. When replacement dishes arrived, the food was cold. The waiter was surly and could hardly be understood. The Depot will not be on our list next year. We will reserve early enough next year to go to the Vintage Press.

On the way to the Sequoias, we stopped in Visalia and decided to lunch at The Depot. What a treat! This fine restaurant, formerly the railroad depot of Visalia, is a treasure trove of everything railroad. Among the many items of interest, two are singled out here because they are highly unusual: several stained glass windows of train engines, lovingly gathered from various parts of the country and a beautiful wood carving of a train engine in the bar. There is much, much more that cannot be detailed here so let's move on to the food. Fantastic is the word that comes to mind from salad through main course through desert. And The Depot has to have one of the most knowledgeable bartenders around: I ordered a Campari with OJ, an unusual bar drink to say the least, and, though he had never prepared one before, it was absolutely perfect. The staff? Try courteous, helpful, considerate, caring, accomodating - the best experience ever in any restaurant. The maitre'd/manager obviously runs a tight ship but one that clearly garners respect from those who work there. He is a charming individual and will do his best to answer questions regarding the immense history surrounding the restaurant. If you pass through Visalia and are looking for a place to eat that combines history, excellent food and service, and an unusual ambiance, you can do no better than The Depot Restaurant. P.S. the photos don't do the place justice; just got a new camera and working out the functions; wish I could have captured the food but you'll just have to try it in person!
