“The Abbey”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

I love St. Andrew's Abbey and wish I could visit more often. The high desert is fabulous and beautiful and peaceful. The sky is full of stars. It's rewarding to wander up into the hills and down to the water and around the different garden spaces. It is a place free of television and cell phones and computers where an occasional miracle happens if you're open to one.

I've been many times to St. Andrew's since my first 2008 retreat for weekend directed retreats. I love all the liturgies, the freedom from the usual distractions and "busyness" of home and work, versus the peaceful "balanced days" of Benedictine life at the Abbey in a beautiful holy place.
I've enjoyed the lovely garden and going for short hikes in all the seasons. The meals are good, well-balanced and meet a variety of dietary needs. Without exception at each of the many directed workshops I've attended, participants have been from a diversity of faiths. The instructors, whether the monks or oblates bring a vast array of knowledge to the workshops and always encourage discussion. Lastly, the rooms are simple, clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: Workshops fill up quickly. It is important to register early to get one of the upper level rooms whi...

Staying countless times at St. Andrew's Abbey has been a most beautiful blessing for me. I like it so much that I volunteer in the retreat office. Although God dwells throughout creation, I sense that this abbey is a very holy place. The pond is my most favor place to commune with God. Singing the liturgies with the monks in the chapel has given me a profound sense of the interconnected nature of the Body of Christ. The accommodations and wonderful food take care of my physical needs in such a way that I can direct my attention toward receiving spiritual nourishment and sharing it with the other people on retreat as well as the people I am sent back out into the world to love.

Room Tip: Although the abbey is surrounded with beauty, best views are in rooms 1-11.

The sign at the entrance says, "No hunting, except for peace" and if this is what you are hunting for, you are sure to find it here. The rooms are simple, but adequate, with wonderful views. The meals are good and the lunch time soup always tasty! Mass is celebrated daily and the monks are wonderful and friendly. Many directed retreat/workshop offerings from one day to a week long or you can do a private retreat. Lots of places to hike and reflect. Everyone I know that has spent time at the Abbey, always look forward to returning. It is definitely a very special place to visit, renew, and recharge.

Best place to go to get away and renew. It's away from all distractions. It's quiet, it's lovely, it's peaceful. The rooms are comfortable and have views of the desert and mountain landscape. No tv or phones, but there is wifi connection. There is a lovely garden to relax in or you can go for a hike or take a walk around the pond. The food is simple and good. You eat in a communal dining room and have a chance to talk to the monks. You can go for a private retreat or join in a directed retreat. And if you have never had the pleasure of talking to a monk the monks at St Andrews are smart funny and charming. And the price is right (it includes 3 meals a day).

If you are looking for total decompression from urban life, check in to St. Andrew's Abbey. Rooms are spartan but very clean. The meals are simple but plentiful and tasty. While it's been recently equipped with wi-fi in the common area lodge, this is the only connection to the outside world. No TV, phone, or cell service. Think off the grid. The setting is beautiful - high desert flora and fauna with many cottonwood trees and native plants which invite visitors to explore and hike. You can fully participate in the tranquil monastic suite of 5 services a day - or not at all. The hospitable monks and oblates offer a range of themed retreats throughout the year or you can just chill with your own private retreat. There is nothing else like this in Southern California.
