“Great deals and great food!”

Sammy's Cafe is a nice new Mom and Pop restaurant. It has great deals and provides great service for the local area. I had the Chicken Pot pie special for dinner and had several different breakfast choices on previous occasions. The portions were large and the prices were good. This is a welcome change from the chain reetaurants.

“Diner-Style Goodness in Upland”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

Went with hubby to Sammy’s Café last Friday night. We both weren’t too adventuresome because we both got fish and chips. The food was good – not great – but good. So good, that we’ll come back.

We always look forward to a new restaurant in town because we give lots of credit to a new business, especially a restaurant, which has one of the highest (if not THE highest) failure rate among new businesses.

Sammy’s Café is in the extreme southwest corner of the Von’s shopping center on the corner of Euclid and Foothill in Upland – west of the gas station. We parked on the west side and really weren't sure where the entrance was. The west side is VERY dark – Sammy’s should contact the center to find out about better lighting because to get into the restaurant, you have to cross one of the main routes into the center. In the dark, this can be dangerous. Plus, the café could put a sign/light over their door.

Once we got in, we were greeted warmly and quickly seated. The place is VERY clean, but somewhat stark. From the lighting on the walls, I guess they are waiting for their artwork that will warm the place up nicely. But, hey, this is a café, not an art gallery, so I was ready to EAT!!

There was a good selection of burgers and sandwiches, along with some main dish salads, but both hubby and I settled on an entrée. Our server, John, had just the right touch. He was there when we needed it, but didn’t hover. No helicopter servers here! Sometimes in a new restaurant, the staff doesn’t know what to do, so they can bother you every few seconds or simply ignore you. John asked simply once if we were ready to order (we weren’t), but he came back within five minutes or so to take our order.

John wasn’t too familiar with the menu yet. He thought the entrée came with a choice of baked or mashed potatoes along with the fries (it didn’t)). He also was unsure if it came with a salad (it did), but we didn’t mind his hesitation since it was opening weekend.

The salad was a standard salad – a mixture of iceberg and romaine with tomato wedges and croutons. Now, I’m not normally fond of croutons, but these darn things were superb – I bet they made them out of the previous day’s garlic bread. Although simple, the salad was fresh, crisp and cold. A nice beginning to a meal.

Our entrée came out quickly and very hot – cold fried fish is one of life’s failures. There were four pieces – each about a half filet. I don’t know if they were hand-battered or not, but they were very good. Fried perfectly and not at all greasy.

The “chips” part was a generous helping shoestring potatoes. They could have been fried a little crisper (to my taste) and the chef should definitely have salted them before serving, but that was easily rectified and we happily munched away.

Also on the plate was a small serving of vegetables – a welcome addition that’s often been done away with lately. Veggies were cauliflower, carrots, and green beans. Now, these were prepared right in the kitchen. PERFECTLY cooked! Not too raw, not too mushy, and seasoned beautifully. Loved them!

All in all, Sammy’s was a great find. Simple diner food, simple comfort food, is what any town needs. Open from 6 am to 9 pm daily, this is a good place to stop by if you want a satisfying meal. We will return!
