Review of Orr Hot Springs

Orr Hot Springs

My wife and I took a much needed vacation, and we started it all at Orr Hot Springs. The receptionist was so very pleasant and patient. We knew that Orr had some particularities about it, such as no real shower facilities. You do smell some of the sulfur in the water.

However, the resort never seemed crowded, and the people were very friendly. The water was just the ticket for our cold bodies, as we settled down for an evening of soaking. We were able to get up early and soak alone, looking up into the stars and feeling a light dizzle over our faces. It simply was the most romantic experience the two of us had experienced in our many years of marriage.

The room we had was both spacious and tastefully understated. As I am quite tall, the bed they put me in actually was long enough to sleep in. We loved Orr, and are planning a return trip soon.

Orr Hot Springs is set about 9 miles outsides of Ukiah. If going there, try going right before sunset as the drive down to the site is beautiful. We arrived to find a quaint little commune that was in a world of its own. Although Lying Planet says clothing optional, they did not mention anything about no soap or shampoos in the showers, which makes it a somewhat uncomfortable experience if you want a romantic getaway in the sulphur springs. The room itself was nice and clean, but did not have screens on the windows or a fan which for this time of year would have been helpful as temperatures can rise up to 100+ during the summer even within the forrest. The pools itself were nice and welcoming if you were an overweight naked bushman, but at least they were friendly. They do have private bathtubs that can fit one person, but again bring wetnaps or a washcloth to at least give yourself a sponge bath afterwards as it can be smelly and sticky afterward. Also, be sure to bring plenty of food as there are no other stores or markets onsite or near the springs location other than in Ukiah which is 9 miles out and mark your food in the kitchen. Be prepared to be surrounded by flute / banjo music until the late evenings as the regulars there like to play. For $135 / night, it could have been a more posh camping experience if it had normal showers. Other than that a great story to tell other citydwellers.

the setting is lovely, a great place to spend a weekend or even a day with someone, or by yourself relaxing. the kitchen is stocked with just about every type of gadget you might need to use, so don't bother bringing up your own pots, etc. I would reccomend any paper items or towels that you want to use, you'd better bring yourself.

i did encounter some rude people but it won't discourage me from going back.
