Let me start by saying that I've been going to Nieuport 17 since it opened on 17th Street. Years have passed, the restaurant moved, but a couple of things have never changed...quality food, and quality service. Alas, the new menu leaves much to be desired, and the service is no longer top notch (with a couple of "old timer" exceptions). It has always been our home-away-from-home, but no longer. Menus must evolve to meet current tastes, but eliminating the classic dishes that have enticed diners to the restaurant for generations is foolhardy. Nieuport has always drawn an "older" crowd, but each generation has brought the next generation to join this family. Now with new ownership, there is no sense of family. The food is still good, but the menu looks like every other menu in town in this price category...which is expensive and uninspired. The only menu item left standing from years past, is the Sunday evening Fried Chicken Dinner. However, if you arrive after 7:30, don't count on eating chicken. They always run out. Too bad. I miss the days before the management and menu changed so drastically. It has changed, but not for the better.

My wife and I recently visited Tustin as part of a weekend trip to Irvine. While in Tustin we stopped at Nieuport 17 restaurant for drinks and live music on 8/23/13. My wife read some reviews about live music which were favorable so we gave it a try. Since were only there for drinks and not dinner, seating options were limited but we got seats at a table. The singer that night was named Hope and she and the keyboardist (a very accomplished pianist) did a very nice job with the music. The service started out lukewarm like the waitress didn’t really want to be bothered. Her name, according to the receipt, was Laura. After we got the first round, she became scarce. The music was good so we stuck around for the first set, despite the poor service. After the first set the singer came to our table, sat down and chatted with us for a few minutes. Her keyboardist followed a few minutes later. During the second set the waitress continued to pass by our table as if we weren’t there, avoiding all eye contract continuing to act like she didn’t want to be bothered to serve us. On a couple of occasions we flagged down a different waitress to get service and a dessert. We left after the second set satisfied with music but the service was abysmal.

Finally got to Nieuport 17 on advice of a friend. The decor is vintage German hunting lodge circa age of the Red Baron, which suits me just fine especially with the memorabilia and signed images of legendary aviators displayed in the lounge area. I opted for steak and wasn't disappointed. I was treated to classic dining experience that isn't found in too many places these days. The unique aviation motif made it all the more special. I'll be back!!

Had business lunch here twice in the bar area. Had fish both times. First time preparation was ok, veggies too soft. Second time the piece of fish did not seem to be fresh and was over cooked and dry. Bartender Tommy is old school, polite and appreciated. He has to fight the door from the bar to the restaurant each time as it gets stuck. The overall feel of this place is outdated and tired and food quality does not hold up to the expected standards. Prices are very high for lunch.

The menu has been updated and the service is still some of the best around. A go-to restaurant for a special dinner.
