My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Donner Lake Inn. We wanted to get away from the Bay Area for some snow fun and celebrate my birthday. Our room was very comfortable and our host's were very helpful. The bathroom had plenty of really hot water but only a shower, no tub, this was the only down side to our stay.

Charming, insightful and kind are these great B&B hosts. I love this place! My family of 4 has stayed here during the winter for the last 3 years. The breakfasts are fabulous with more than you can eat of homemade pancakes and frittata, fresh fruits, juice, and coffee is awaiting, there is always something special to start the day. Later in the day, when you return to the main house there will be a warm fire, home made cookies and milk for the kids, wine and cheese for the adults. I love the way they treat the children offering games, books and conversations that make them feel good. A gentle, “please clean up after yourself” has a positive effect on everyone. I leave this place feeling nurtured. My husband and I had quality alone time because the kids were happily playing; they ran up to the kitchen ahead of us eager to see Mary preparing breakfast. The rooms are nice each one with its own theme, and a warm stove fire. The big win of this home away from home is the comfortable surroundings and the relaxed atmosphere. Mary and Tino make this a vacation because they take care of you. They are gifted hosts. . .The Donner area offers the beauty of the Sierras with family affordability. We usually ski at Donner Ski Ranch, lift ticket is $15, great lessons for the kids; Sugar bowl and Donner Ski Ranch are 3.5 miles away from the Inn. Sheila

I stayed at the Donner Lake Inn for a mid-week ski get away and skied at Sugar Bowl which is 3.5 miles away, and I could have skied at any of the North Shore ski areas which are nearby. The Inn is perfect in every way from the supremely comfortable rooms with gas fireplace heaters to the great room on the second floor with a wood burning stove, great chairs, a wood paneled cathedral ceiling and plenty of books and games. Mary's gourmet breakfasts are superb and she serves afternoon appetizers. Best of all was Mary and Tino's warm hospitality, and they happly share their knowledge of the Donner/Tahoe area.

Staying with Mary and Tino made our family ski trip a breeze! They serve a wonderful breakfast with everything fresh and made from scratch ( I could barely drag my husband away to go ski). They are so patient with my kids, and make sure they always have everything they need. Mary even reserved a little sippy cup she had on hand just for my daughter becuase she figured out that was the only way we could get her to finish her juice. They are always ready with a great restaurant recommendation and have a complete list of local menus at hand to make the decision easy. She is always ready with the latest travel advisories and weather forecasts. They are really people people, and enjoy having us all in their home playing games and talking at night. The rooms are on the small side but very comfortable. with beautiful bedding. Example of how they care - a family was stranded last weekend in the huge storms we had up there, and their car was stuck at a ski resort. Tino got into his car in the height of the blizzard, and risked a lot to go out and rescue them and put them up for the night. We've been there 4 times and will keep coming back!

The Donner Lake Inn is a great place to stay at the holidays. We came that long way from Germany to stay five days at the Donner Lake Inn. We had the best american breakfast and enjoyed meeting Mary, Tino and their friends. The rooms are very nice and clean, especially the fireplace you can sit in front of, after having a great day in the snow.

Mary and Tino were very helpful by informing us about trips and restaurants in the whole area. We explored nearly everything and ate at the best restaurants.

All in all we can say it was our best amrican holiday we have ever had!

A terrific value and lovely inn. Mary and Tino are very nice people, able to put a room full of strangers at ease around the breakfast table. Mary is a divine cook, and the wooded setting of the property is very pretty.

The very strong points:

a. They let us pay via PayPal, very convenient!
b. Half the cost of rooms in nearby Tahoe city, and twice the luxury.
c. The inn keepers are warm, welcoming people.
d. Very filling and diverse gourmet breakfast!

If there are any minor weak points, they are these:

a. The walls are thin and plumbing loud, if your neighbors are leaving early it will be an early day for you too.

b. Note that in the summer time, the gas to the fireplaces are turned off and the creek is dried up, so choose a room accordingly when these advertised amenities are not available.

c. The location is right off the entry road from the highway, at the bottom of the hill, so there is a fairly constant but light stream of traffic. It's not very loud or any problem at night though, and trucks don't use this route.

We'd recommend this inn to travelers wholeheartedly.

I don't even know where to begin this review, so I'll start by saying that we would visit Donner Lake again just to say with Mary and Tino, owners of the Donner Lake Inn.

This place is AMAZING! It's like a home away from home. It's beautiful, quiet and a place you will want to return to again and again.

The rooms are located next to the main house in their own building. Each room has its own entrance. Our room had a window seat where you can sit & look out at the trees. Stunning!

The room was smaller than we anticipated, BUT who needs a big room when you are out all day exploring the area. The room has very unique gas "stove" heater and WOW does it heat things up quickly. (We are thinking of buying one for our bedroom at home!) It really added to the charm of the room. The blankets on the bed were soft and very comfortable. I don't know what they used to "scent" the room, but I have never stayed somewhere that smelled so pretty as our room did.

The shower in our room was very small and there is no bathtub, but when making our reservation, Mary advised us that there was no tub. There are no fancy hotel-type soaps or shampoos here, but bottled body wash and a blow dryer are provided. (I always bring my own soap and shampoo anyway.)

The main house is where you can kick back with the owners and watch an HD big screen t.v. or play games OR talk to Mary and Tino. There was hot tea & wine available, plus little goodies for us to eat. (My hubby couldn't resist the big bowl of candy sitting out!) Mary made many offers to provide something to eat if we wanted. We couldn't get phone reception and there were no phones in the room, but you can use the phone in the main house if need be. (Mary said they have free long distance.)

Breakfast is DELICIOUS. We loved that Mary made her own pancakes and waffles from scratch. There was quiche, thick & plentiful bacon, yogurt, fruit, tea, coffee, orange juice. Both mornings, we chose to sleep in. No problem for Mary . She made a plate for me the first morning and let us eat at 10:00 a.m. the next. Now, THAT'S being an accommodating hostess.

Besides the rooms, beautful surroundings and yummy food, what REALLY makes this B&B is how homey and comfortable it is. There are no false pretenses happening here. It is 2 people who obviously love what they are doing and truly care about others. You feel as if you are being pampered in your own home.

We have already decided that we will be back with our daughter (yes...they welcome children!!) and we can't wait to return. Even if you aren't staying in this area, you need to visit it just to stay at the Donner Lake Inn.

Just a side note...we stayed at another B&B a year ago that was over $100 more a night than the Donner Lake Inn. (My husband reviewed it under his own tripadvisor name.) While it was wonderful, it wasn't nearly the same experience as our stay in Donner Lake. So, price is no indication of quality.

Thank you Mary and Tino for making our anniversary weekend so special!!
