Owner description: For the modern family that prefers substance with a unique, laid-back style, Northstar California Resort combines California cool with high-end luxury, on-mountain exhilaration with a sophisticated alpine village atmosphere. Halfway between one of North America's coolest mountain towns and one of the world's most beautiful alpine lakes, Northstar is a destination on the rise, having poured nearly a billion dollars into creating Lake Tahoe's premier luxury snowsports experience. Upscale shops, refined dining and Lake Tahoe's only five-star slopeside lodging is married to impeccable grooming, incredible tree skiing and enough variety to challenge every level of skier (and world-class terrain parks to keep the kids busy). Those who come to Northstar know what they're looking for. Sometimes it's adventure, sometimes it's to learn, sometimes it's to relax in a welcoming place with family and friends. No matter what that experience is, they'll find it to be exactly the way it should be.

My family and I recently visited. When we scheduled our trip, we looked on the website calendar and we saw that on Tuesday nights, there was "Turtleneck Tuesdays" at the skating rink. The advertisement said that from 6 - 9 p.m., there would be skating at the rink with 70s and 80s music. My 10 year- old daughter not only loves to skate, but she really loves 70s and 80s music. On the Tuesday of our trip, we picked out our favorite turtlenecks and we were so excited to go skating to 70s and 80s music. Due to a delay with our dinner being served, we did not arrive at the rink until 7:45. But we were excited to have an hour of skating to our favorite music. We paid for our skates (very expensive) and we headed to the rink. The DJ was playing "Disco Inferno." We started grooving to the music. But when the song ended (shortly before 8 p.m.), the music stopped and we saw the DJ putting away his equipment. We skated over and asked what he was doing, and he told us that the management at Northstar told him to shut down at 8 if the crowd was "too small." My daughter started crying. Who wants to skate to no music? Of course, when the person rented our skates and collected our money at 7:45, he did not not tell us that the music would end at 8 (because the online advertisement said the music would play until 9). When we returned our skates and attempted to get our money back, there was no employee in sight.
This experience ruined our trip. I will NEVER go back to Northstar.

Loved the service, the village, the ski area, although rather limited due to poor snow conditions and warm temperatures.

Our family with 2 children stayed with another family with 2 children in one of the condos in the resort area. While not on the mountain, there was regular transportation to and from the Village that made it fairly easy to get back and forth. The village is pretty nice, some restaurants, some retail, the usual. The skating rink was always so crowded that we didn't even try. The staff are very attuned to children and were very helpful - help on the lifts, etc. The ski rental area could use a lot of efficiency improvements. Although there weren't many people, the wait to rent skis was almost 1.5 hours. I can't imagine what it would be like on a crowded day. The recreation facility was nice - we used it for the hot tub. While nice, we would have preferred the tub to be near the condo to avoid the shuttle logistics. One of us tried to use it during the day and found it very crowded. Lift prices are exorbitant, but that's typical for Tahoe skiing. All in all we enjoyed the trip.

Great Skiing for all levels.

The prices for food and drinks in the lodges was nothing but gouging. Bring your own lunch.
