Owner description: For the modern family that prefers substance with a unique, laid-back style, Northstar California Resort combines California cool with high-end luxury, on-mountain exhilaration with a sophisticated alpine village atmosphere. Halfway between one of North America's coolest mountain towns and one of the world's most beautiful alpine lakes, Northstar is a destination on the rise, having poured nearly a billion dollars into creating Lake Tahoe's premier luxury snowsports experience. Upscale shops, refined dining and Lake Tahoe's only five-star slopeside lodging is married to impeccable grooming, incredible tree skiing and enough variety to challenge every level of skier (and world-class terrain parks to keep the kids busy). Those who come to Northstar know what they're looking for. Sometimes it's adventure, sometimes it's to learn, sometimes it's to relax in a welcoming place with family and friends. No matter what that experience is, they'll find it to be exactly the way it should be.

We enrolled our child (who had turned 7 just days before our trip) for a full day of instruction. A couple of hours later we received a phone call that she was not feeling well. They put her on the phone. She was clearly fine but did not want to participate. She colored until we got up the mountain. Sometimes children will get a second wind, so they allow the parents to try a pep talk first. Our child clearly wanted to leave. The school was so generous to give us a credit for another day. We realized that since she was so newly 7 that she felt overwhelmed being with the 7-12 age group. She went back two days later in the 3-6 age group and did very well. She not only enjoyed everything about her day (learning new skills, meeting new friends, a warm and kind instructor), but she gained a new passion for skiing. She was so confident and proud when I picked her up. We received a detailed and uplifting report from her very attentive instructor. He was so kind to her (and her classmates) and she responded well. Overall, a great experience.

My wife and I went to Northstar on Saturday. Saturdays generally should be avoided due to the crowds but sometimes work schedules dictate fun. The crowds were huge and a lift was down resulting in a 30 minute wait for the gondola ride up the mountain. Rental lines moved quickly. With the ability to purchase lift ticket and rentals at one counter you can skip a second line. Rental staff were very friendly and helpful. Once on the slopes, trails were well groomed and there is a good variety of runs. For moderate to skilled skiers there are quite a few blue and black runs. The back side was markedly less crowded than the front side. The summit grill at the top of Mount Pluto is very good but a bit pricey - $25 for lunch for two is common. Overall an expensive ski slope and one of the best at Tahoe. Skiing is better than Heavenly and staff are much more friendly than Alpine Meadows or Squaw. A good value if you buy tickets online ahead of time.

We are locals who live in Reno, NV. It is a 40 minute drive from Reno to Tahoe. If you drive, be sure and stop on I-80 at the border of Cal/Nevada-at the Gold Ranch gas station. Here you can get a fast food fix, gas, and a mini store for snacks and great coffee. There is also a casino of course if you have the time.

Skiing at Northstar is a great experience. The blue runs are typically long and well groomed. Burnout is a great run for the initial rush and then a long winding adventure to the bottom and then back up again! There is a snow park for the boarders. Ski patrol does watch for out of control boarders who can ruin the day. There is also a lesson for intermediate skiers at 1:30 each weekday under the big sign at the top of the life Comstock Lift. Do ask to make sure it on the day you are there. This is the area where 2 lifts are near each other, ski patrol office, and a lodge for eating is nearby. The view of Lake Tahoe from this vantage point is lovely. We have lots of ski resorts to choose from, and Northstar is always our pick. The parking is not bad. And a shuttle comes by frequently. Many new amenities have been added. I am sure it is expensive to stay in the village, but ice skating and some shops are there also. We are expert skiers and find the terrain to be fun and adventurous. There is a lot to explore on these mountains and we have yet to be bored after 10 years of skiing here! Enjoy!
