Owner description: For the modern family that prefers substance with a unique, laid-back style, Northstar California Resort combines California cool with high-end luxury, on-mountain exhilaration with a sophisticated alpine village atmosphere. Halfway between one of North America's coolest mountain towns and one of the world's most beautiful alpine lakes, Northstar is a destination on the rise, having poured nearly a billion dollars into creating Lake Tahoe's premier luxury snowsports experience. Upscale shops, refined dining and Lake Tahoe's only five-star slopeside lodging is married to impeccable grooming, incredible tree skiing and enough variety to challenge every level of skier (and world-class terrain parks to keep the kids busy). Those who come to Northstar know what they're looking for. Sometimes it's adventure, sometimes it's to learn, sometimes it's to relax in a welcoming place with family and friends. No matter what that experience is, they'll find it to be exactly the way it should be.

“Great snowmaking, helped save our snowboard vacation”
Reviewed January 11, 2012

Visited Northstar 4 days out of 12 (the other 8 at Heavenly) and was very impressed with the resort.
Northstar supply daily grooming reports on piste maps which enable you to see what is actually open at a glance (Heavenly could learn from this).
I found the staff to be very friendly and the snowmaking was really good. (around 20% open)
Quieter than Heavenly and handy if you fancy a shopping trip to Reno after a day on the mountain.
It is only 45 minutes in the car from South Lake Tahoe and is really worth a visit. If it ever snows this season it will be even better.

“Great Mountain”
Reviewed January 8, 2012

No snow in Tahoe when we went, but Northstar had its own snow making capabilities which saved our trip. For the 25% we boarded, it was a nice mountain with good parks. Want to go back when theres fresh powder. The EpicMIX thing is pretty cool too

“Among the best snow and terrain at the moment”
Reviewed January 8, 2012

There's been hardly a snowflake fall from the sky this season so far. Luckily Northstar is protected so their snowmaking is opening more terrain than most other ski resorts around the lake. The manmade snow means a respectable amount of terrain. Lift prices are $101 for adults (get a Tahoe value pass in April-October for under $400: it pays for iteslf quickly) but for value, its one of the better ski resorts. (Hotshots prefer stepper mountains but, until the snow gods dump snow, Nstar is great value.
