Northstar Lodge by Welk Resorts
Ranked #5 of 13 Hotels in Truckee
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 15, 2014 via mobile

This Welk Resort fully exceeded our expectations!!!

It starts off with an inside parking garage that is security and is underground and heated. We were surprised by the opening gates, as it reminded us of a ride at Disneyland, and it made our vacation start off with a laugh and a smile!! An inside elevator takes you and your luggage (numerous luggage carts) up to your floor.

While the front lobby entrance is small, there is a first floor above that which has a huge guest lounge with plenty of seating, lots of tables and a large fireplace. There is also a ski room for storing your ski's in the winter.

Now to the rooms!!! They start off with a beautiful kitchen which was fully stocked with appliances, utensils, and everything you would need when away from home. All the appliances are full-sized Viking with Granite countertops and self closing drawers!!

Next is the living room which is open-beamed vaulted (if you are on the 4th-top floor. Not sure what the other floors are like), with a fireplace and big-screen TV. The seating arrangement is great for watching TV and/or for sitting to read a good book. There is also free WI-Fi access which is a very nice feature, as we were concerned about using up all our data on our plan during the week!!!! A covered balcony with a fireplace is just off the living room.

Now come three full size bedrooms!!!! The master bedroom suite is very large and has a king size bed, along with a room-sized walk-in closet, and a gorgeous bath that contains a spacious tub, a stone shower stall and double sinks, with self closing drawers.

The second bedroom is a good size with a queen size bed and has a separate bath across the hall.

The third bedroom was a nice surprise as it is a suite as well!! With a king size bed, the only differences are a regular size wall closet and no bathtub, but the stone stall shower is a very good size!!

What a beautiful place to stay!!!! Top of the line everything!!!! Makes you feel very spoiled indeed!!!!

The lobby area also has a movie style theatre with large comfortable seats that can be reserved to watch approx 250 movies to choose from. There is an adjacent building that has a well-equipped gym, pool table and air hockey games and outdoor swimming pools.

The Welk facility sits just in view of the Northstar Village shops and eateries. There is an ice skating rink in the middle of the Village and in the summer, it becomes a roller rink. If you are there to ski, the lifts are just outside the buildings.

Overall, we would highly recommend the Welk resorts as places that anticipate what you'll need and then they go beyond your expectations!!!! We are so happy to be a part of the Welk vacation family!!!!!!!!!

This is a beautiful lodge. We stayed here for 3 nights in the summer off-season with our kids ages 4 and 1. I found it on Tripadvisor so wanted to fill in some of the blanks that I had before coming here because there are so few reviews for this lodge. Other reviewers said that they have everything you need. I wanted to fill in some of the detail on this so you know what you need to bring (and not bring) when you come. They supply: paper towels, dish soap, a sponge, dishwashing detergent, decaf coffee, caffeinated coffee, a coffee filter that came with the coffee maker, humidifiers, lotion, Tide Free & Gentle laundry detergent and snuggle fabric softener sheets, a step stool (great for preschoolers to brush their teeth), shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, Q-tips, hair dryers.

We asked for a 4th floor room facing Northstar Village based on the room tips here. We were given room 406 but we found that it was pretty dark in the afternoon -- it is East facing. We preferred a West facing view to get prolonged sunlight into the late afternoon so we switched to room 205 which was great.

One thing that we did not realize when booking is that there is no room cleaning/housekeeping unless you stay one week, in which case they come mid-week. The units are individually owned and it is also a timeshare property. Also the pool area is dated and could use some new furniture.

The highlight for us was the fireplace on the porch where we could enjoy a glass of wine while admiring the bright stars while the kids were sleeping.

**It gets dry here so I would recommend bringing nasal saline spray and your lotion if you prefer a particular brand (they have lotion). ***

It is only a 2 minute walk over to Northstar Village, which is super cute. My son brought his Kickboard scooter and rode around the village a lot while we hung out there during the days and evenings. There is mini golf that you can play – you just need to get clubs from the sports game booth. And a large sand box for little ones. There are two frozen yogurt/candy stores and a toy store. There are two late evening restaurants in Northstar Village (during the summer): Rubicon Pizza and Mikuni Sushi. Both are great, especially with small kids. There is also a swanky wine bar and a Starbucks. In the evenings you can get a Smores kit from the open air Bar that sits next to the roller skating rink. You can also take the gondola up the mountain for a casual lunch with great views of the mountains and mountain bike riders.

Room Tip: Try to get a higher floor -- 4th is the highest. Even numbers face east and odd numbers face west...

I Stayed with my family in a three bedroom lodge weeks before for our trip to tahoe and it is over expected! I was choosing from the Ritz Carlton and this and I am so happy that I choose this resort due to the 20 minute mountain drive from the main road to Ritz Carlton. The room is huge and furnished with solid hardwood furniture and the hotel located just 10 minutes to lake Tahoe which is ideal to escape the noise, and the village itself is well supply the needs. The thing that really defined the stay is the cinema which my sister and I booked for Aliens and it is one of the funniest experience I had in any hotel.

Room Tip: Every room is perfect but ask for a village facing room for view

This was the most beautiful place we have ever stayed and all of the staff went above and beyond to make our trip even better! We stayed in the off season and loved the tranquility of the place. The 3 bedroom unit was perfect for our family of five and grandma and grandpa to stay the whole week. We loved it so much we extended our trip an additional two nights.

I tried several other resorts using Interval, but Welk puts them all to shame. There wasn't one part of the accommodation that didn't go far beyond our expectations. The kitchen was FULLY stocked with appliances, utensils, and ground coffee! They don't give you a miserly packet of dish soap, dishwasher soap, and laundry detergent; they give you actual containers that will last your entire vacation. The kitchen is first-class, right down to very nice wine glasses and an ample supply of every kind of dish/container you'll need. All the appliances are full-sized Viking. Granite counters, of course.

That's just the kitchen. The living room is open-beamed and warm with the requisite fireplace and big-screen TV (there are TVs in each bedroom as well). It has a terrific seating arrangement both for talking and for sitting alone to read a good book. There is also WI-Fi access for those who cannot be cut from the Internet umbilical cord. The covered balcony has a warm fireplace (not fire pit) so you can enjoy the mountain air and the views even when it's a little nippy.

The master bedroom contains a room-sized walk-in closet, and there is ample storage for a nice long stay (you won't want to leave). It also has private access to the balcony for getting up early or staying up late, alone. The bath contains a spacious tub, a stone shower with seat, double sinks, and a separate water closet.

We stayed in the 3 bedroom suite, expecting 3 bdrm/3 baths. Wrong. It's 3 bdrm/3 baths. There were only 4 of us. One of the extra bedrooms had its own balcony.

Don't let the small lobby entrance fool you; the first floor above has a huge guest lounge and wine bar, plenty of tables in secluded clusters, fireplace, games--anything you don't see, ask. But here's a little extra that pushed our experience over the top: there is a media room with about 25 reclining seats that you can reserve for a private showing of the movie of your choice (from about 16 pages of titles). Bring popcorn!

Parking is underground and heated. An inside elevator takes you and your luggage (numerous luggage carts) up to your floor. Adjacent to the building is a well-equipped gym and pool.

The Welk facility sits just above the Northstar cluster of buildings and shops. It therefore is a little more quiet and maintains an atmosphere of "getaway" rather than the sardine approach of other resorts.

If you are there to ski, the lift is just outside the building. The definition of "ski in/ski out." There is ice skating at the Northstar rink (in the middle of the building cluster). In summer, it becomes a roller rink. Children will not be bored. Neither will adults.

Overall, a place that anticipates what you'll need and then goes a bit beyond your expectations. We'll be regulars here.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the 4th floor for the best area view.

An amazing facility. Rooms well-stocked. Beautifully decorated. Makes me very happy to be a Welk owner. Ski valet is very nice. Access to the exercise facility a nice bonus. The only thing missing are barbecues, and a after ski wine and cheese reception.

Stayed in 3-bedroom unit with family of 4 for 4 nights. As others have said, like staying in a beautiful condo with high end finishes everywhere. Mountain lodge aesthetic mixed with contemporary finishes. Bring groceries and take advantage of outstanding, well-equipped kitchen for eating in and save $ vs. pricey restaurants in the village (this is not a standard hotel with room service). Staff was super friendly and helped quickly with several things. Had their own ski valet service which was very helpful. Right next to gondola to Ritz Carlton - which provides more dining options at mid-mountain (cafe there good and reasonable price for lunch). Don't miss the 16-person high-end home-style theater - reserve it early and pick from their long list of DVD's or bring your own (no extra fee). Have their own exercise facility that isn't huge but is well equipped with modern equipment - the non-skiier in our family used it every day and loved it. We've already booked return visit for next year.

Room Tip: rooms facing north star village have better mountain views
