Cozy ambiance, white table cloths and attentive service. Food was good and the experience was relaxing compared to the other alternatives in NorthStar Village. Not sure how it would all play out with a bunch of kids in the room but when we were there it was all adults.

We recently had dinner at Baxter's Bistro in the Northstar Village. As we were being seated the hostess apologized for the children in the restaurant. We did not think too much about it at the time. Baxter's is a small dining room, maybe 15-20 tables. This night 6 tables had children. They were not bad, just children. We had the Dungeness Crab appetizer, arctic char and flank steak. All were excellent. The next day, we received a call from the chef inquiring how our experience! We had the occassion to return another night, the food and service was just as we experienced. Highly recommend Baxter's.

Randomly ran across Baxter's on my way to the gondola to go up the mountain at Northstar-at-Tahoe.

Since I hadn't settles on dinner plans with the gf, we decided to swing by after I was done snowboarding for the day. The Apres Ski menu seemed underwhelming, but the dinner menu was intriguing so we made a reservation to come back (yes, the dining options in north Tahoe are limited enough that this seemed the best bet to drive back to; we were staying only 10 minutes way in King's Beach)

Fortunately, they have free parking (self-parking or valet -- both free) in the evening, and everything went without a hitch. The presentation and ambiance are very nice -- from the decor and lighting to the music (can't attest to live jazz, which they apparently have on Fri/Sat, but the music they were playing was perfect and was the right volume.)

The service was professional and respectful, and the food we ordered was good. We ordered:
1) a cocktail (a "naughty cider" -- not bad)
2) a Bistro Salad (extremely tasty and well worth the $11 -- maybe the best value on the menu. A big frisee salad with flavors of salt and vinegar on the greens, with generous portions of duck confit and a poached duck egg to top it all off)
3) a flank steak entree (perfectly seasoned and cooked, with a nice arugula salad and great fingerling potatoes as well)
4) and the "Hunter's Plate" which consisted of quail, venison, and a boar chop, paired with winter vegetables fricasee and spaetzle. The spaetzle seemed homemade -- in any case, it was very good. The veggies were carrots, brussels sprout leaves (?), and turnip(?), and were perfectly cooked and delicious. The venison was great; the boar chop was decent; the quail was... well, it's quail: just like chicken, but less meaty and harder to eat. It didn't taste bad, but I think rabbit would work better for this platter.
5) dessert: winter smores (gingerbreak graham crackers with spiced marshmallow in the middle) with a pumpkin mousse covered in candied squash (mousse + squash very yummy, but the dessert seemed pricey at $9)

Mostly good! A few misses and/or overpriced items, but overall a good experience, and worth the trip if you're staying not too far away in north Tahoe!
