“It's all about location!”
Reviewed May 26, 2013

The Highway 1 coastline is a sensation in itself and the Sea Ranch' location fits the picture very well. Beautiful modern wooden architecture, a panoramic window in the restaurant and spacious rooms with a view on the pacific are a real joy. Less agreeable is the fact that our room had little sound insolation, so whatever joys our neighbor' s were celebrating during the night, we were part of it. Involuntarily that is. This should be changed. Yet the walk to the stairs that lead to the beach and the beach down below itself make up for a lot. Breakfast and dinner are all right but nothing more than that. We would expect more given the exclusiveness of the place. But whenever you are going up north along highway 1 you should treat yourself on this place.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor have an even more spectacular view. Try to get a corner room.

I think I would have given this an "average" instead of "poor" except that I received an email from the lodge asking for my feedback, and I replied with my feedback and did not hear back from them. It seems that they only wanted positive feedback!

so it wasn't terrible, but there were a number of things that contributed to a "meh" feeling about the place. First of all, I have stayed here in the past and really liked the food; breakfasts are included and, in the past they were great; now they are just average, and while dinner is expensive, it was previously very good. but no longer. Breakfast is still included but they give you the impression that they have to provide it (because they promised it) but they aren't really going to go out of their way to do anything special for you. When you sit down they make it very clear you can get coffee or tea and an entree and that's it. You want OJ? that's extra. You want a side of bacon? Extra. Your entree comes with bacon? Ok, we'll give you two slices. It all seemed kind of cheap. worse was the fact that none of the food was particularly good. They had only one vegetarian entree on the menu (a pasta) and it was kind of greasy. Based on our disappointing meal on our first night there, we cancelled our dinner reservation for two days later. But then two days later we got a call from the restaurant asking where we were. What?

When we checked in, we were asked if we wanted a free newspaper in the morning delievered to our door; but it wasn't delivered. the second morning we were there, we were at the front desk asking about hiking trails and the clerk there offered to get us a trail map from the (locked) store - the store doesn't open until 10 am - but I didn't want to buy a map just to pitch it after the one visit, so she offered to let me borrow the reference map kept at the front desk; that was very nice of her (we just borrowed it for 5 minutes to look at the trails). The next morning I decided that I did want to buy a map after all but the clerk that morning (a different clerk) said the store wasn't open and she seemed quite surprised that the clerk from the previous day had offered to go into the locked store and get us a map; like we were asking her for something obviously burdensome. She said she couldn't do it (I wasn't sure if she didn't have the key or if she just thought it was impertinent for me to ask) and so I asked to look at the reference copy of the map which was kept at the front desk and she said they didn't have such a thing. We pointed out to her where it was kept and she grudgingly handed it over to us. Got the sense that we were really a pain in the neck to her. Expensive lodge should mean good service right? Not at Sea Ranch Lodge! It means "customers are a pain in the neck". Ah well, we'll help them out and stay elsewhere next time.

Lastly, breakfast is included but I received an email from them a couple weeks prior to the visit saying that our last breakfast would be on the morning of Mother’s day and they were having a special brunch from 11am and that the regular breakfast would not be provided; instead we could either choose to make a reservation for brunch and get $15 off the price OR we could have a continental breakfast from 8 am to 9 am. We are early birds and also didn’t want to attend the brunch, so we chose the continental breakfast, but it included just a small muffin and a very fruit plate (three strawberries, a couple pieces of melon and pineapple; most of it not ripe.) We didn’t even get our choice of muffin, we got a blueberry and a cranberry handed to us and we had to each take one of them; well, at the time I just chalked it up to them being in a hurry to setup for the brunch but in retrospect I think we should have had a discount on the room rate. After all, if a full breakfast is included in the room rate and they choose to not give us a full breakfast, then why are we paying the full rate?

Lastly, I had asked for an upstairs room when I made the reservation but they gave me a downstairs room. Alas, I looked at the email confirmation and it said nothing about which room they had reserved for us, so shame on me, I should have gotten it in writing.

We apologize that your original response had been missed. We truly value all feedback. We express regret that the breakfast around Mother’s Day was not what you had expected due to the brunch offering and understand your perspective. We have responded to you privately and hope you are pleased with how we have addressed this. We hope you will come back and visit us again.

Wow! Love this place! Such a unique experience and well worth the price if you are seeking a restful getaway with an incredible view.

Rooms are spacious, clean, modern, and very comfortable with unbeatable ocean views. Love the rain shower, fireplace and window seating area in our room. Walked the trails enjoying spring flowers, ocean views, seals frolicking in the surf and deer. Meals were excellent and service friendly and helpful. This is a great stop on highway 1 and/or a retreat for a couple nights. Free wifi in rooms; no TV (yeah!). The Anderson Valley wineries and Mendocino are not terribly far away for a day trip.

The wooden architecture makes this feel like a luxurious camp for adults, and blends perfectly with the setting. Love the environmentally friendly focus.

The restaurant has a nice wine selection and prices are reasonable considering this is all you have here. Food was excellent! Best crab cakes I have had anywhere.

Room Tip: All rooms have great views. We loved our upstairs room, although note no elevators if you have any...

My husband and I planned a few days in San Fransisco as a quick getaway. We stayed in the city, but wanted one night along the coast somewhere. We drove up to Sea Ranch, and we were so glad we did. Wonderful lodge, friendly staff. We had a regular King room, but were graciously upgraded to a deluxe room. The views were superb. The room was fantastic, including the fireplace we didn't think we needed. But after a great dinner in their restaurant, we did turn it on to take the chill out of the air. Included breakfast was great. We had the pancakes and French toast. Be sure to save time for a walk along the coast. The wildflowers are amazing. And we are from Texas! You will not be disappointed with a stay here. We are already planning a return.

My husband, daughter and I spent one night at Sea Ranch Lodge in late April. It was a glorious time to visit as the wild flowers were in full bloom along the lodges wild flower trail. As expected, the sea views were wonderful. We saw a seal bobbing around and according to another guest, we just missed a mama and baby whale viewing.
The room we had was excellent with a nice sea (and deer) view. The lodge provided dog beds, food and water bowls, and treats for my daughter's dogs who were visiting with us.
Our only gripe was that although the lodge advertised sea walk trails, they did not offer a map of the trails. It seems to me that if you are going to tout your walks, you ought to make FREE trail maps available. There was a free map of the wild flower walk.

While out driving the coast and visiting the beaches, we found ourselves in a very remote location, with dinner time looming. We stopped at the Sea Ranch Lodge because it was the first place that we came to. And we are so glad that we did, that we've already planned a trip back to stay the night!
We started out with a drink on the couches, while waiting for a table by the windows. Definitely wait for a table by the windows! Great view, and the baby deer grazing right outside were absolutely adorable.
The staff was amazingly friendly and very attentive. The food came at a great pace, even when we ordered extra stuff mid meal. They have some great wines, and they let you bring in your own for a nominal corking fee.
The food was delicious. The Dungeness crab cakes were the best I've ever had. We ordered an extra order after the first one disappeared! The chef there, Phillip Kaufman, really was amazing. All the meats were incredibly soft and well seasoned.
We only stayed for dinner and dessert (which was excellent as well) but we are very excited to go back to stay at the hotel and try more of the food!

The best there is to offer in the area....but there are some problems: Bedside lamps are low wattage and fluorescent..Bring your own regular light bulbs if you want to read! The bath room door is hung on a railing and huge gaps on each side prevent privacy while sitting on the toilet. The noisy kitchen exhaust fan resonates throughout the entire dining room and drove us crazy. Windows do not have any lockable positions while open.

While in the area...Do not miss the drive through Coleman Canyon Road to or from Occidental and Highway 1 north of Bodega Bay. One of the greatest scenic drives in California!

Room Tip: Go off season and save a lot of money and the roads are not crowded either!
