This place is great! A little bit of a 'shop' atmosphere, but those of us that love this place find it part of the charm. You can have a nice cold beer with your meal, or enjoy it outside, but not both. There just simply is no place they can legally let you do both, as the bistro tables outside are just across a 'public' sidewalk that no one walks down. This part is the state Beverage Control's doing, not much they can do there. The prices are also a little more than I usually pay for lunch, or 'take-out' type dinner for that matter. This is what happens when you get GOOD food, made by people who CARE about a getting you a good meal, and make it with fresh, high quality seafood.
Ok, so much for the 'bad', if you can call it that. This place is Aaaawesome! Just REALLY good seafood made in the old-school fish market way. The place is owner run, and it shows. There always seems to be a co-owner right there. The Clam Chowder and Ahî Tacos are personal favorites of mine. The special seafood quesadilla and chioppino hold their own as well. Or check the special board on the way in, and just order that, or throw a dart at the blasted menu and just enjoy what you wind up with. It'll be good.
Monday's All-You-Can-Eat Crab Feed is always busy, so I get it to go. Believe me, if you order one for everyone, there is NO WAY they'll finish it. And I'm a big guy with an appetite to match.
If you haven't tried it, try it. You'll be hooked.
WARNING: If you think chain's have good food, (Chili's, Applebees, Red Lobster, etc.), stay the heck away from places like this. It'll ruin your current dining habits, and you won't be happy with mediocrity anymore.

I convinced my husband to stop here on our trek up 101. As soon as we entered, he was excited. Fresh fish, clean, and a real happy atmosphere. He ordered a calamari sandwich and I ordered the famous fish tacos. Even before we got our order, he was back at the counter ordering a calamari appetizer. He was in heaven. The appetizer was better than what he gets in Monterey. Back again he goes to the counter to get a bowl of clam chowder. Another hit!

Our food arrives and he starts eating his calamari sandwich. THICK slice of calamari and mixed fries (regular and sweet potato). My tacos are delicious!

We will definitely stop here again on our way to or from Southern California.

I've been to Pier 46 numerous times and have had some great experiences. But our last visit there last week was very disappointing and it might just be enough for us to never go back, regardless of how good the food may be.

My husband and I celebrated Father's Day early (on Wed) with the kids to avoid the Sunday brunch rush on the actual day. So after spending a long day driving from Shell Beach to Morro Bay, we decided to drive all the way to Templeton to get some seafood. We were in the mood for some yummy food to bring home and relax.

We arrived 10 mins prior to closing, the sign still said "open" and the place was still pretty packed. Right after we walked in, one of the employees turned over the "open" sign to "closed" (even though it was still before the 7 pm closing time). As we were in the process of ordering our food, we were greeted with complete rudeness and annoyance and we were told that we should call ahead and order next time. We were handed a menu and the lady pointed out the number and told us to save the number for next time. WHAT???

Yes, I understand that the place is almost closing...but seriously, you couldn't just tell us "Hey sorry but the kitchen's closed" or something of the like instead of taking our money and being completely rude to us. So they take our order and as we sat there waiting for our food, we just chatted and didn't pay any attention to our receipt (our fault). When the food came, we discovered that they had placed an order of coleslaw (which we did NOT order) instead of the garlic bread we had ordered. So we got a hold of one of the guys working in the back and explained the situation to him. He baked up some garlic bread fairly quickly and told us that we can go ahead and just keep the coleslaw as he handed as one thing of garlic bread. Coleslaw was $2 and garlic bread was 50 cents...hmmm.

Anyway, we felt very unwelcome there. I get it, restaurants don't like it when you walk in right before closing time. But it said 7 pm closing time so if we walk in at 6:50 pm, then technically it's still OPEN. No need to be rude. It just sucked that after a long day of fun with the family, we had to end it on that note. Plus it didn't help when we got home and tasted the food and it wasn't that good. Oh well. Time to look for another seafood place in N County.

If you are driving through on Route 101 or in the area of North County (Atascadero/Templeton/Paso Robles), stop in the Trader Joes shopping center. They are open for lunch & dinner & close at 7 pm. They are also closed Sundays. They have a small eat in area & also patio tables outside. It is a fish market/restaurant, and very, very good. Prices are reasonable & you order at the counter. The service is very quick. Fish & Chips is $9.00 for about 3 large pieces & fish is really fresh. They make the tartar sauce & it is the best. The fish & chips come with great fries that are half sweet potatoe & half regular fries. They are really good. They make homemade white clam chowder daily. It is good & has nice chunks of clam & potatoes. The fish tacos are openfaced (2) corn tortilla shells & they will grill or fry your fish for them. As mentioned in other posts they use cabbage in the tacos. They also have "plates" which are like salmon, rice, and grilled vegetables for only about $12 or $14.00. Their salads are also good & they have soups like chiopino. Be sure to make a stop and try it, you won't be disappointed.

Based on Trip Advisor reviews, we stopped here for lunch during a day of wine tasting. It's a bit south of most of the west-side wineries, but because it's right near the intersection of the 101 and Vineyard Dr., you can get there in no time at all. Parking is a bit of a chore because it's located in a shopping center with a Trader Joe's. You might have to circle around a bit on the weekends to find a space. Still, it's worth it.

Pier 46 is definitely more market than restaurant, but there are a few tables inside and outside for diners. You order at the counter and wait for your number to be called. The menu has a good variety of sandwiches, salads, and plates (including not just fish & chips, but also shrimp, calamari, or halibut with chips). There were also a few items just for kids. My wife, who eats salmon all the time, said that the Balsamic Salmon Salad had some of the best salmon she ever tasted. I chose the grilled fish tacos and they were outstanding. The portions were ample - the tacos had to be eaten open-faced - but not absurd. And the prices were very reasonable given the quality of the seafood (the tacos were $9; the salmon salad was $10). There's a cooler of drinks and they also offer beer and wine.

If you're in the Paso Robles area, I highly recommend making this a lunch stop.
