We had a selection of 'small plates' prior to embarking on a wine tasting tour of the area, everyone in our group enjoyed their food, I had the grilled chorizo tacos which were excellent and belly pork was very good too. The service was good but in a place trying to play on its European charm we were very surprised that they could not offer anything other than a drip coffee, an espresso or cappuccino would have been nice and when we asked for warmed milk the waiter could not do it though to his credit he did try by putting the milk in a hot cup but it did not really work.. The views are lovely and I would certainly go back..

Our server at the Meritage restaurant seemed super friendly, however she never told us anything about the list of specials we noticed on boards after we had ordered. She brought our glasses of wine and never returned until it was time to pay the check. After ordering, we waited almost an hour (the restaurant was not full) for our food and it probably would have been longer, but another waitress heard me say we should leave and came running out with our food. It was sad. No offers of anything more, bread plates on the table with no bread brought out or offered, no more wine. Then when collecting the check the waitress began to tell us about all the frogs that live in the restaurant. I'm sure the view from here is amazing during the day but you cannot see a thing at night. I've heard that Callaway's two story tasting room is amazing but the restaurant appears to have been a shed they decided to start serving food in. Perhaps that's why the very loud frogs still think it is their place.

After spending several hundred of dollars on wine at the Calloway winery, we walked over with our Calloway wine glasses to have lunch at this restaurant. The bartender who was entertaining her friends at the bar, scolded us for walking into the restaurant with wine glasses from the winery???

She then told us that the restaurant closed early because it was slow. This is despite the fact that the winery states the restaurant closes at 4pm. If every restaurant closed early in Temecula when it was slow, nothing would be open midweek.

This reflects poorly on Callaway. I would skip this place especially after reading about the mice. Mice droppings can contain dangerous pathogens and they should be taken seriously.

Not very appetizing when dining and have mice scampering at our feet. The excuse from the staff was that the building is near a vineyard and acted as if this was totally normal. Rodents in a restaurant are not acceptable, especially in the main dining area. What must the kitchen look like? we were not compensated for a thing, which might have made them look liked they cared a little, but will never return! As soon as we left, we couldn't believe we actually paid the full amount of our bill! We just wanted to get out! Going to give the health department a call.

The Meritage restaurant is an unassuming building right behind the Callaway winery. Certainly not impressive from the outside (nor inside really), the view overlooks acres of vineyards and mountains to the west from up on the hill. I've passed by the restaurant on several different occasions when visiting the winery and finally pulled the trigger this time after several recommendations from local winery staff. My wife and I are foodies so praise does not come easily, but all three items we had were impressive. We had a special of the day garbanzo bean spicy ham and roast pepper polenta that was spectacular, the Cream of Asparagus soup was excellent and we fought over who got to eat the special of the day Cabernet and shallot skirt steak. Prices were very reasonable.

The tapas menu looked quite good with dishes like: tempura calamari with pickled chiles, Duck confit tostada with lentils, Potato saffron and rock shrimp croquettes, Wagyu beef carpaccio with lemon and mushroom.

Service was prompt, but we were there at an off hour and the place was not crowded. The staff seems to be rather young so I wouldnt expect Michelin star service here by any stretch. We will be going back for sure.
