“Train string of pearls”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

The Techachapi Loop is so great. You drive to the lookout point and wait for a train. We were lucky. A train approached as we parked our car. It was amazing to watch the train complete the loop and catch its last cars. It was a long train, so we got to see it make the complete loop. A second train came along also, but it was not as long as the first one. If you like trains, take the time, get off the freeway and drive the side road to the loop overlook.

“Only if you're interested in trains”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

The loop is an interesting site if you are interested in trains or civil engineering. It's hit or miss if you see a train, if not, it's pretty boring. The day we visited the track was closed much of the night and the repair was just being completed when we arrived in the morning. As a consequence, 4-5 trains in each direction were waiting to go thru the loop. We waited about 30 minutes for the tracks to open, then we got to watch the trains. To get there, take the turn off from Keene, the road from Tehachapi is very winding.

“You've got to like trains to like the Loop”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

I confess, I've been coming to the Tehachapi area to chase trains for 50 years. OK, 49 but in 2014 it will be 50. "Back in the day" you could drive right up to the tracks but now the Loop property is completely gated off. Repeat visitors take note. Now you must drive up to the Loop overlook where the historic markers are and be satisfied with the overview. Be patient. Trains run when they are ready but I can tell you Fridays, Saturdays and early morning and evening are the best time to catch a train on the Loop. These days most trains loop around themselves which is quite a thrill to the first-time visitor. There is nothing at the site so use the rest room and take water before you head out. It's well marked and about 15 minutes off highway 58 at the Keene exit.

“If you're into trains worth the stop”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

When a train is on the loop its a sight to see. Otherwise boring if you're not into trains, history or the line is empty (as it was when we were up there).
