The transcontinental Railroad needed a way to get up and over the Tehachapi mountains, so a Swiss engineer designed a loop to gain 80 feet elevation - it goes around a round mountain to get it done. A freight train of more than 88 cars will overlap itself - great views from above, but also down by the tunnel mouth.

If your idea of fun is parking on a turn-out and watching long freight trains go by on a long curve, then enjoy. The viewing area didn't really give a real good perspective on what was so special about this supposed engineering marvel. For us, it was a "This is it?" moment.

The road from Tehachapi to the loop is twisty but fun and the viewpoint of the Loop is easy to find. The signs are informative and the view excellent - but it does help to have a train to watch as then you get the full effect.

I suppose some folks get a similar feeling when they view the Eiffel Tower or the Hoover Dam, but watching a train pull through the Tehachapi Loop is a profound experience.

Hiking the terrain around the Loop to get a good viewing spot is half of the fun. The other half is imagining what is must have been like when it was being built and the first steam trains made it up that pass...

If you are interested in trains, then pull off I-58 and take a look! It is considered to be one the engineer marvels of modern times.
