“Old Range Steakhouse Lake Tahoe”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2008

As we arrived in Tahoe, we carefully considered our first meal there. We chose Old Range on the advice of our concierge b/c we wanted steak. I had the prime rib, which was cut WAY too thick (for Texas prime rib eaters anyway) and was fatty and had very little taste. I couldn't eat it. My girlfriends ordered the veal, which tasted like a simple roast and the gnocchi that accompanied it was terribly chewy and undercooked. We were HUGELY disappointed and then we watched our waiter put our store-bought rolls into the microwave, barely heat them, and then serve them to us. He did not want to split the check for us and was rude. To top it off , the iced tea was instant! Poor service and terrible food! Save your money.

“How do they manage to stay in business?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2008

We have a second home in Tahoe and enjoy experiencing new restaurants around the Lake. The Old Range Steakhouse was a huge disappointment to us. The steak had little flavor and an unpleasnat texture (I would not be surprized to learn they purchased their steaks frozen from the local grocery store). We found the service and staff to be unfriendly at best and the owner that "greeted" us upon our arrival to be down right rude. Prices were also high compared to other local restaurants. I must admit, after our terrible dining experience it hurt to pay that bill when it arrived! Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. The mushrooms might be OK, but If you do choose to eat at this establishment prepare to be underwhelmed, insulted and very disappointed.

“Un Family Friendly Establishment”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2008

The owner saw we had children with us and turned us away this last Friday evening. Asked about a table for 8 the next evening (Saturday) & he rudely replied nothing available at any time on Saturday. Called to see if he would discriminate and sure enough the 1st thing he asked was whether there were any children in our party and then asked how old! Needless to say we did not dine there. Clearly not interested in family dinners.

“Mediocrity at its best”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2007

We were completely underwhelmed by this restaurant. The menu prices were high for the area and time of year (fall in north Tahoe) and the food was mediocre.

We arrived right as they opened for the evening and were quickly seated in a booth with a great view of Lake Tahoe, but the server was slow in getting back to us for the rest of the meal.

The rolls brought to the table in a wrapped basket were not even warmed and to top it off (literally), the butter was straight from the 'fridge... impossible to spread.

The cut of prime rib my husband ordered was decent but nothing of note. The horseradish sauce on the side was simply horseradish with copious amounts of mayonnaise.

The ribeye I ordered had really no flavor - it was an odd feeling eating it.

Of note, however, were the FABULOUS red potatoes served with the ribeye. That was absolutely the saving grace of the meal. Bits of spinach, pepper, and spices in perfectly cooked quarters. DELICIOUS!!

I'm certain there are better places to get steak in North Tahoe. Save your time & money and skip the Old Range.
