“Perfect for alternative to the "in" crowd places”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

This place is like a comfy pair of OLD shoes. We skied four times in a week and enjoyed most of it. The lifts are old and slow but so are we! Lodge needs much work but value is there and staff are fun!
How nice to get away from e snobbery of Squaw and Northstar...

“Small but pleasant enough.”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

Snowboarded here on 06/01/13 (Sunday).
$66 for a day pass, cheap by US standards but it Is pretty small, there are only 4 chairs. The snow conditions were good, packed powder after a huge dump about a week earlier. Homewood was quiet, especially by European standards and considering it was a Sunday.
It keeps a decent skier/boarder occupied for a few hours and there are a few steep runs such as the run back to the main lodge. There's a few areas just outside the boundary too that would be fun in fresh snow towards the back of the top lifts. Ask the lift attendants/ski patrol, they seemmore than happy to recommend where to go/not go.
There are some great views of the lake here, shame there isn't a restaurant up the mountian to enjoy the scenery over a decent lunch. They did have some kind of hut that only served cold food, so we went back down the hill to eat in the lodge.
If you are a beginner/early intermediate I would definately recommend Homewod as it is a cheaper alternative to the nearby Squaw/Alpine and Heavenly. If you are at a decent level there's no need to spend anymore than a day here although it could be a good place on powder days because with it being so quiet, you'll be making fresh tracks pretty much on your own.
One other thing, there are two bases to Homewood, a few minutes drive from each other, there is a free ski bus linking the two, so don't worry about ending up at the wrong base after the lifts close.

“Average slopes, awesome view”
Reviewed January 4, 2013

The view from the top onto a lake is trully breathtaking, the slopes on the other hand are mediocre. Advanced skiers won't be challenged much. On the other hand, it might be a good spot (cheap) to hone your skills on your own. If possible, get lift tickets in advance at your resort or online, because the lines can be long to buy 'em on the spot.

“Avoid the children's ski school”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

We chose Homewood for the children's ski school, thinking it would be a smaller, more intimate, positive experience. Unfortunately this was NOT the case. Most of the "instructors" are from South America (cheap labor through a work study program?) and their ability to speak and understand English was very limited - a terrible idea for young children trying to communicate their needs and trying to understand what's being said. I heard instructors barking out orders/suggestions in Spanish. Really??There were large children to instructor ratios with no assistants for either our 9 yr old, 8 yr old or 5 yr old group classes.

I watched child after child in trouble, on the ground, completely ignored - "instructors" just walking by. Our 8 year old said "she just told us what to do, but didn't teach me anything", and having watched, I tend to agree. They spent the ENTIRE morning part of the class learning how to walk - sideways and the crab walk only. Not very fun or interesting for a child.

Our 8 year old who doesn't eat meat was presented a pita bread pocket with limp zucchini and red bell pepper, hummus and tufts of sprouts. Can you spell gross?! The manager of the children's program refused to acknowledge that such food is not appetizing to 95% of children and when I suggested that maybe a quesadilla, a bean and cheese burrito, or a piece of pizza might be a better choice for a child she argued "I have 150 students, and we can't cater to all their whims and desires" followed by "I get lots of picky eaters". She might look at the source to consider the cause of all the "pickiness". For the meat eaters, there was a corn dog and potato chips. Hmmm. Where's the fruit? Where's the carrot sticks?

Never again. We'll take our children to the real school that pays for qualified instructors who actually LIKE children.

“Best views in Tahoe”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

Homewood is a great place for young kids and families, and those who want the best views in Tahoe. When Alpine and Squaw are crowded, drive a few miles west and enjoy the day at Homewood.
