“Best layover hotel.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2013 via mobile

We had a full day layover in San Fran and checked in to this hotel, the airport shuttle provided was really convenient, comes by every 15minutes. We wanted to spend the day exploring downtown, and the hotel staff was really helpful in giving directions even provided with printouts for different options. The best part of this hotel was the bed. It's one of the most comfortable king sized hotel bed we have ever slept on, and trust me, we needed it for our long flight to Asia the next morning. Bathrooms were clean as well. They provided a decent continental breakfast, coffee wasn't very good. Definitely recommend if you want sweet dreams before an 18 hour flight halfway across the world the following morning at 6am.

Positives: Room was clean and modern. Comfortable bed. Convenient to airport with shuttles running every 30 minutes (we had a 6am flight). On site restaurant and three or four decent restaurants within walking distance (Houlihans, Asian Buffet, Ihop).

Negatives: Check in and out was crowded. Plan on 15-20 minutes depending on time of day. Staff was so-so on the friendliness meter.

I) PREAMBLE

Since American Airlines was running a super sale for Miami - SFO at $251.60 RT with tax (and a confirmed complimentary upgrade to first class!) I didn't hesitate to take advantage of the long MLK weekend to start cumulating miles for 2013. This gave me about 5,200 qualifying miles out of the 100,000 that I must fly every year in order to maintain my elite status that allows me to fly in first class for pennies. Long life to American Airlines!

The MAIN REASON why I chose this Best Western Grosvenor Airport Hotel is their HONEST CANCELLATION POLICY (day of arrival by 4 pm), while more and more hotels are now adopting an utterly dishonest cancellation policy of one or even several days before arrival!

Dishonest, indeed, because every time that one of my flights has been cancelled (which happens more and more often nowadays!) that has never happened the day before but always at the very last minute!

A few years ago, most hotels had an excellent “6 pm courtesy hold” reservation policy, without any credit card; some still do but less and less as time goes by. Then, they started asking for a credit card with an honest cancellation policy: day of arrival by 6 or 7 pm.

But now, more and more hotels want you to cancel one or two days before the day of arrival or you lose your money! They get away with it because people accept it; until their flight is cancelled, they lose their money and learn the hard way that this is an utterly dishonest policy! If everybody refused to accept it as I do, those merchants would have to go back to a “day of arrival” cancellation policy or go out of business!

II) BEST WESTERN GROSVENOR SFO: VERY GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY AT $72 (Senior/AAA rate) + TAX.

When I arrived to SFO Friday 1/18/13 at 11:30 in the morning, I waited about 15 minutes for the free shuttle to take me to the hotel, where I got room 814 on the eighth floor out of nine. This shuttle runs every half hour, leaving the hotel at the hours and at the halves and going through SFO about fifteen minutes later, depending on the terminal.

This is a big King room (Huuuge by European standards!), twice bigger than the one I had at the Ibis Styles in Paris last December 2012, for which I recently posted a review in Trip Advisor. It has a king bed, two large night tables (twice as big as all those that I have seen in Europe), a fancy square table serving as desk, with another lower one by the window, where you may place your cocktail while watching the news on TV. It also has a nice drawer furniture with marble top and a microwave, a club chair (something virtually unknown in Europe unless you pay $400 per night!), plenty of AC outlets and lights, facing SE with plenty of sunshine and a wide open view over the bay.

Naturally, there is a luggage rack, with plenty of space to put it all around (unlike BW “Hotel de la Poste” in Troyes, France, for which I also posted a review), and a big closet with mirror doors from floor to ceiling. There is also another mirror over the square table, on which you have a lamp with phone and AC outlets. This is very convenient to hook your laptop, at least for those who dare to suffer the hassle at the airport, which I refuse to do. The room also has two phones: one on this table and another one by the bed.

The small bathroom has a bathtub and a fixed wall shower. The tub is reasonably clean, but nothing compared to the coconut white one that I found at the BW "Hotel de France" in Bourg-en-Bresse, France, last June 2012, for which I also posted a review here in TA.

Unlike all Best Western hotels I have been to in Europe (except at the Apollonia in France, where there was none), in which the "minibar" is in fact a cash machine full of bottles for sale, with no ice compartment and no space left for you to put your own Camembert or Canada Dry, in this SFO Grosvenor hotel, there is a real frig, with a real ice compartment, which is empty because in the US there is an ice machine on every floor (something you'll never find outside of the US, not even at the Four Points Sheraton in Montevideo, not even in your wildest dreams!) but where you can put your ice cream if needed. Also, there are only four soda cans on the door, so the rest of the refrigerator is empty for you to put whatever you want to put in it, which is not the case in Europe.

The BREAKFAST BUFFET is quite BIG, with four cereals, milk, so-so croissants (but I lived over forty years in “Great Paris”, so I am a “connoisseur”), toasts, jams, etc.; another sector holds juices and water, coffee and four types of flavored cream; there is also a hot section with scrambled eggs, sausages, good potatoes (with skin!) and even rice. Finally, there are boiled eggs for those who like them, good yogurts and fresh fruits. The pineapple was outstanding during my three days stay but the cantaloupe was not always very ripe.

The only things missing were ham and cheese. What? No cheese? Never tell a Frenchman that there is no cheese!

You will never find anything equivalent in Europe for less than $500 per night, and I'm certain that the room will never be so big.

Why, then, only FOUR STARS INSTEAD OF FIVE?

Because of the NOISE.

Unlike my usual cheap Lux hotel in Paris, which has double glass windows, this hotel does not have that feature, so you will hear every car passing by Airport Boulevard.

On the other hand, the interior is as noisy as at the Ibis Styles and you hear every conversation of people walking on the hall, even at low voice, especially while waiting for the elevator, of which you also hear the noise, even during the day.

With a good sound insulation, I would have certainly given five stars to this very good hotel.

III) EXCELLENT PUBLIC BUS CONNECTION to San Francisco and to SFO airport every thirty minutes.

Bus 292 goes by the door and there is a stop in each direction, a short block north of the hotel, past the red light.

Local fare is $2 ($1 for seniors) but you may buy a daily pass for $6 ($3 for seniors) and go to San Francisco in 45 minutes or to the airport in fifteen.

The terminal in San Francisco is on Folsom and Main, and if you walk one block to Embarcadero, you will see the famous "Fisherman's Wharf" two blocks on your left. Then you can walk all along Market Street and take the bus back on Mission and 7th.

Normally, you are supposed to pay an extra $1 when you take the bus in San Francisco to go back to the airport, but I was told that only young drivers go by the book. I was lucky to have an experienced driver who didn't make me pay when I returned to the hotel...

Also, please note that this day pass is only good on “Samtrans” busses but NOT in the half dozen different bus companies (we only have one in Miami!) running in San Francisco. But you will be able to go to San Mateo, etc., and take any other “Samtrans” bus.

IV) A GASTRONOMIC DESERT

Finally, with the exception of a McDonald’s right across the street, this is a gastromic desert and you must walk 0.6 mile North of the hotel to find a Denny's or 1.4 mile to go downtown South San Francisco, where you will see several restaurants, a Subway fast food, a Starbucks and a couple of other coffee places, groceries, etc.

Indeed, this Best Western has a restaurant in premises but they only serve dinner “à la carte” from 5 to 10 pm and therefore they don’t have a lunch set menu, which is my favorite choice wherever I go, especially in Europe.

IN SHORT, this is a very good value for money in spite of the exterior and interior noise, which can be remedied by running the heater/AC fan continuously in order to reduce the noise.

Room Tip: Rooms over Airport Boulevard face the SE and a wide open view over the bay. On the opposite side, t...

All I can say the title says it all. Thank B/W for getting it right. I will be back. Have traveled a lot with B/W, in fact have owned one for over ten years. This place has always been my home away from when traveling out of state from the Bay Area. I feel for my travel dollars this operations gets all my votes.

Very pleasant stay. Bed is comfortable. Nice view from the 8th floor. Buffet breakfast is very good. Will definitely stay here again. The only thing that can improve on is the number of valet carts. Perhaps 2 more carts ?

This hotel is very close to SFO and the parking is safe and very reliable. For us, the experience is stress free. We are local people and use it EVERY time we fly out of SFO.The staff are friendly and the management (Jim) is very receptive to making your visit just perfect. Few managers these days seem to actually take the extra effort to make your visit special. We have found no reason to park and stay anywhere else.

Room Tip: The suite is a very nice comfortable spacious room.

Only complaint was long wait for shuttle (+45minutes). Your demand for 200 character minimum is excessive. I really have nothing more to offer on the hotel stay that I have 'nt already expressed. Plan on staying there this coming weekend but will not be completing any more surveys!
