Embassy Suites by Hilton San Francisco Airport - South San Francisco
Reviewed September 23, 2013

I enjoyed the hotel as a whole. It was very comfortable and peaceful. The inside was beautiful and very tropical with all of the plants and pools. The breakfast was very good with the made to order bar. They did not keep up with the tables very well, but it was very pleasant eating by the coy pond amongst the plants. Very close to the airport. Not much to eat around there though.

I was forced to stay around the airport due to a delay on a flight to Hong Kong. United was going to put me up at the Crown Plaza, but I changed this to Embassy Suites South SF after reading the reviews on the Crown Plaza. Hotel is OK for a night or 2 if you are stuck, but there were a lot of other groups there with no reason to be near the airport. The place is pretty old and needs redoing. The breakfast is OK if you want quantity over quality, which judging by the size of many of the patrons, is exactly what they wanted. My biggest complaint is regarding their WiFi. It was free, but slower than dial up. That alone is a deal killer for me.

Also, the walls are pretty thin. Better bring ear plugs to get a decent night's sleep.

Room Tip: Try to get room on top floor where you won't here the elephants stomping around above you.

The hotel is well situated to the airport and have a wonderful waterfront position. The suites are big. That's all that is good about the hotel. The service is poor to average the rooms are tired and was a terrible mess outside my window. Only go to breakfast if you want to stand in a line for 15 - 20 minutes to get your eggs. We had a group of eight and went to the restaurant for dinner - despite being 25% full we were told there were no tables available and come back in 30 minutes - when we went back the restaurant was 10% full and we finally got a table. The food was ordinary at best. To their credit they gave us a few drinks free to make up for the inconvenience. The pool heater wasn't working and it is barely big enough to do laps. Very disappointed overall. It has much better potential

We stayed at this hotel on the last leg of our first holiday to California, just after completing the Pacific Coast Highway. We dropped our hire car at the airport and took the free shuttle to the hotel. This hotel is a little way out of San Francisco but please do not dismiss it for exploring as it is super easy to get into the City. There is the free shuttle from/to the airport (SFO) so no expensive transfers to Union Square or Fishermans Wharf and the hotel is considerably cheaper than these locations! The CalTrain station is only a few minute’s walk away and the hotel will even drive you there in a mini bus for free, if you wanted! At weekends there is also a free shuttle to Fishermans Wharf area direct from the hotel. CalTrain is a fast, regular and cheap service ($6 Day Pass) - the only advice would be avoid peak times, like when the SF Giants game has just finished at AT& T park, as catching a train back can be a little stressful. The staffs are friendly, helpful and great people, like everyone we met in San Francisco. The main reason we chose this location was that we love Embassy Suite hotels for good sized suites, the free breakfast and drinks reception. The ease of getting to it from the airport and the good public transport links to San Francisco make this a superb location, at a really reasonable price.

I stayed here in the summer of 2008 with family and again in May 2013 for two nights. I would stay here again, as I consider the Embassy Suites to be a good value. Nevertheless, this hotel shows signs of slipping service quality. My room was not cleaned nor my bed made after the first night. (Granted, I had to take a nap in the late afternoon to sleep off some jet lag, but I was out of the room the entire morning and early afternoon.) The desk clerks were quite friendly, but the breakfast service opened late the second morning when I was under time pressure. I was pleasantly surprised by the food and good service in the restaurant the first evening, so I ordered room service the second evening, which worked well. The problems mostly are ones of fine tuning.

Room Tip: Ask for room facing away from the airport and highway.

This hotel property has very nice room accommodations: the rooms are spacious, clean, well-maintained, with a small fridge and microwave for taking care of snacks or meals. The maid service was very consistent and would readily accommodate requests to make up the room at various times of day. The breakfast is always very good, though the menu is static: you have to really like pancakes, french toast, eggs, omelets, toast, and melon. If you do, you're in heaven. By the 4th day, you will probably be craving some other flavors.
The hotel is located just off of Highway 101, south of Candlestick, so a trek into the City is very easy; you just may have to fight traffic with the rest of the tourists or worker-bees heading into the office. At least getting there and back is pretty simple. Ask the staff for food and market suggestions in South San Francisco (South City) and you can find a number of very good places to eat without the parking hassle of the City.
The staff is very friendly, and everyone is willing to help out. If you need something or some information, just ask; they're helpful in person as well as on the phone.
