We have to mirror the review of April 6. We were on a monthlong trip to the West, and ate at Shiro on a Sunday night at the end of April. When we travel, we try to seek out the best food/wine experiences, and this meal was one of the top two or three we had on the trip (right up there with a couple of celebrated restaurants in Las Vegas).

It's in the quiet town center of South Pasadena. The exterior is not impressive, but the decor in the interior is very nice. The dinner experience sets this place apart. The place was full, but the hostess/part owner (Cheryl) was able to get us a table, and took the time to tell us some good things on the menu, and just generally took great care of us. I have to say that she is one of the most gracious hostesses we've ever dealt with. And the food was excellent, the wine list good quality, ambience lovely. The food is kind of French/Japanese fusion, with some unique items like an Asian-style catfish (served sitting up on the plate) which was fabulous.

We were out-of-towners from Santa Barbara looking for a good restaurant on a Sunday. We more than found it in Shiro.

The ambience is smart with subdued lighting, spare decorations and good jazz (not elevator music). The menu had good variety in appetizers and entrees. The bartender is honest, serving mixed drinks with noticeable alcoholic content (we had scotch/soda and scotch sour that had fresh ingredients -- no package mix).

My wife ordered 2 appetizers as her meal and they were both fantastic. One was the pan-fried oysters with curry champagne sauce topped with caviar. Six tender morsels, cooked to perfection and served on the shell. The other was the tuna sashimi -- a perfect cut, well-presented. My meal was the entree combination of Maine lobster with sea scallops. They were just done enough/just tender enough and served on a bed of sauced cabbage -- which tasted better than it sounds. It was accompanied by a side of cut carrots/potatoes. The wine list ranges to the expensive so we each had single glasses of a good house red. The evening finished with a good dessert and a small glass of dessert wine.

If any of this sounds good to you, try Shiro. You will find the food much better than my descriptions.
