“Reasonable prices in wine country”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We selected The Best Western Plus Sonoma Valley Inn because of the reasonable rates.

I am going to start off with something that did bother us about this hotel. They charged us for our stay months ahead of time even though we could cancel at any point. There were two things regarding this that bothered us; first, they did not ever tell us that this was their policy nor was it written anywhere, it just showed up on my sister’s VISA statement. Second, being Canadians we are charged a 3% ForEx charge for USD charges. For this reason, we always hold the rooms with our credit cards BUT pay in cash. Since they went ahead and charged the CC for the first night (in our case the only night) we were charged the fee from VISA. I just don't like getting surprise charges from establishments.

LOCATION: Staying in Sonoma for our Wine country exploration was excellent for us. We loved the area. The location of this hotel in Sonoma was also excellent. There was a large shopping plaza across the street, unfortunately we did not have the time to explore it but I am sure it had some items of interest in it. The hotel was just around the corner 1 blk and then 1 street down from the Town Plaza or Main Square. It was certainly close enough to walk. On the Plaza there was a lot of the recommended restaurants including; the popular Girl & The Fig, a boulangerie, The Taste of the Himalayas, The El Dorado Kitchen, as well as the Sonoma Cheese Factory which stocked everything you could possibly need for your wine country picnic.

STAFF: The staff was the best part of the stay. We received many excellent ideas of things to do from Chelsea. Laci was on duty at reception when we checked in and she also gave some great ideas, maps and complimentary tasting cards.

BREAKFAST: The hotel offered a complimentary breakfast it was located in the back conference centre. It was a typical continental breakfast with waffles, toast, bagels, jam & other condiments, yogurt, coffee, juice, milk & cereals. The food was just OK & the set up wasn’t great. They had 3 or 4 large tables instead of numerous smaller tables so when people got up and left all their garbage you were sitting there at a dirty table. There wasn’t any staff manning the room so it was just kind of unappetizing. Free or not I would eat somewhere else next time.

One thing that was really nice was there was complimentary Starbucks coffee in the lobby, so after the unsuccessful breakfast I was so happy to get a good coffee for the road.

ROOMS: From all the helpful reviews here on TA we took the advice and booked a fireplace room with two queen beds. We were on the second floor and that was nice and all the rooms around the pool had private balconies. The ones on the first floor had private terraces with gates that allowed for direct pool access. The rooms themselves were a pleasant surprise with thoughtful touches. The beds had nice bolsters with 2 large European pillows which made it very relaxing. There were some wine country magazines and a hard cover book on the area. The bathroom was good, no complaints at all. Even though we did not get a chance to use the fireplace it was nice, too bad we didn’t have more time to stay there to enjoy it better.

In closing I took two marks off for the surprise credit card charge before we stayed and the breakfast wasn't up to par. Overall I would recommend this hotel for the location, we loved Sonoma for a base in wine country, the rooms we nice enough and the front office staff was excellent.

Room Tip: the second floor rooms in the main building have balconies and some have fireplaces

Thank you for your detailed review of your stay with us. We appreciate that you took so much time to share your experience here. We take our guest’s input very seriously so that we can improve our services and our amenities.

First of all, I would like to apologize that you were caught off guard by the charge on your Visa card. That is a standard policy at our hotel to take a deposit of one night stay when the reservation is made. It is also part of our reservation procedure to inform the guest at the time of the reservation, so I am very sorry that didn’t happen in your case.

It was very nice of you to mention our front desk staff and their excellent service. They really enjoy assisting guests in making the most of their visit.

Thank you again for your thoughtful review. We’re sure it will be helpful to many of our future guests.

All best,

Rose Doherty

We upgraded to a suite and the room was big and cozy with a fireplace. The suites are located behind the hotel in a separate building. Only real negative was that the free breakfast was on right outside our room so you heard a lot of noise in the early am. Bed comfortable and room clean but did need to be updated.

We stayed at The Best Western for 3 days while visiting Sonoma wine country. The hotel is located within walking distance to the square and wonderful shops. We had a suite with a sitting area, jacuzzi tub and fireplace in the back building. The only downside was the location of that building. The street was close to our building, it was not that busy and we were on the second floor, it was just the view that was not the great. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was OK. They have coffee and wonderful iced tea in the lobby. The bed was REALLY COMFORTABLE and the room was clean. It was centraly located so we had the chance to visit some great vinyards. Would stay again.

This is a pleasant, well kept property. It's only one block from the Sonoma Plaza, which means you can easily walk to dining of all sorts, shopping, wine tasting, and sightseeing. We had a "fireplace king" room in the main building, facing onto the courtyard. The room was spacious and comfortable (though rather dimly lit for people who like to read). Lodging is rather pricey in the town of Sonoma; this hotel is a reasonable value in this market. The free breakfast is the same as you will find in any other hotel/motel offering "free breakfast"--no better, no worse. The room breakfast was served in was sterile and lacking in warmth or any welcoming feel. Better to take advantage of the many interesting culinary opportunities only steps away in the Sonoma Plaza. We would stay at this hotel again.

We loved the look, feel and location of this Best Western. It looks well maintained on the outside and is centrally located to the downtown square and many restaurants. We we met with a pleasant greeting and promptly checked in. We stayed in Room 204. Everything was great - room was clean, big comfortable bed, real wood burning fireplace.... BUT the room carpet was FILTHY! Even our white socks got dirty so we resorted to wearing shoes in the room. Simply cleaning the carpet would have made this a fantastic property at a great price. PLEASE CLEAN THE CARPETS!

Room Tip: Avoid 204 until they clean the carpet

Thank you for providing feedback on your stay via TripAdvisor. We are so sorry about the situation you encountered with the carpet in your room. Generally rooms are on a regular schedule to have this done, but do to our high occupancy were not able to keep up with this. Based on your review, we shared this concern immediately with our Director Of Housekeeping to address this situation.

We are pleased to see that everything else regarding your stay met or exceeded your expectations. Again we appreciate your feedback and hope if you are ever in the area again, you will give us the opportunity to provide you an excellent stay.

My aunt, mother, sister, and I stayed in this hotel for two nights. The staff was very polite and efficient. The lobby was clean and lovely. The rooms need some major updating. Although the tub, toilet, sink, and bedding were clean, the very dated carpet and tile looked like they had deep grime with stains. Yuk! The pool and hot tub area, along with the grounds were lovely. Overall, the hotel was fine, just needs some updating.

Thank you for your input regarding your stay with us. We are currently in the process of replacing and cleaning carpets where needed. The process has been very slow due to the fact our hotel has been running at or near 100% since June. This is actually a good problem to have, but does inhibit our ability to clean or replace the carpets. For example; in order to clean a room carpet properly the room must be taken down for 24 hours. We are doing our best to stay on top of this issue. However, during this busy time that is not always possible. We are also determining which guest bathrooms have issues as the ones you mentioned so we can take care of those during our slower season. We apologize that these impacted your stay.

Again we appreciate your feedback and hope if you are ever in the area again, you will give us the opportunity to provide you an excellent stay.

All best,

Our room was shabby, had low ceilings, was dark and gloomy and the carpets were dreadful. We didn't feel safe in this place as the patio doors opened right into the interior courtyard.

The breakfast food was not bad but the breakfast room was crowded with dirty tablecloths on communal round tables. Not the way I like to start my day.

The location was the only thing that was good.
