“Harvest Moon - Dining in Mediterranean Fashion; Behind the walls.”

487 First Street W, Sonoma, CA 95476

We were a party of 7, from 3 different places; celebrating my Grand-Daughter's arrival at Sonoma State University. She had been in the Sonoma Plaza before, with her friend who was a student at the Culinary Institute in St. Helena. Her parents and her brother from Irvine CA, and we two from Yountville/Napa. We had scouted the Plaza for dining and saw a man placing a menu in a showcase on the door of a restaurant called Harvest Moon. Somehow we agreed that this was the place for us and we came back a half hour later when the establishment opened for business. (They were in the interval between Lunch and Dinner.)

When out turn came we were ushered past several tables and into the garden behind the building. A tiny entrance becomes a large open yard where about 20 parties could sit. The outside dining is surrounded by masonry walls or buildings, the surface is decomposed gravel. It was a pleasant area. Our host rousted enough seats for us and handed out the menus. Liquid Refreshments were ordered, the 3 drivers passed, had colas or soft drinks. The youngest of the party was 19, Harvest Moon serves a Chardonnay Flavored drink and he liked that. We did not know but each day has a different menu, we all ordered something du Jour that arrived reasonably soon and we got busy. It was a meal that all enjoyed. We liked the idea that small pieces of bread were brought, many folk spoil their appetite by porking out on the bread but we did not. Night fell, pretty colored party lights came on and it was splendid.
My son paid the bill - Splendid!

We have not gone back, too many other places to sample.

Parking is ample, lots behind the establishment are available in the evenings, there are many places behind the State Park on the N side of the Plaza.

We recommend Harvest Moon to anyone tolerant of local cuisine and not too demanding (There is no 'French Laundry' here) to be pleased by anything.

“Menu limited”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2014

The menu was limited. If you are a little picky about selections, not a good place
The food was good, as expected, nothing that would make me come back

“Mixed review due to Management Issues”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2014

The food and ambience were fine, the waitress was very pleasant. However, the manager made a very poor decision which ruined the evening. Soon after being served her appetizer my wife decided that she wanted to change her entrée. The waitress left to tell the kitchen. The apparent manager of the restaurant returned and stated that the dinner item ordered was about ready to be 'plated' and that my wife could not change her meal choice. When he asked if that was okay, I stated "no, not really'. The manager asked if he wanted us to 'throw out the dinner'. He then informed us that he could not make any change. Ultimately, the original dinner was served. Eventually, the manager returned after the meal was over and told us that he made a ' mistake' in how he handled the situation. He did remove the cost of the entrée from the bill, but the sour taste of the whole business remained.

“Wonderful meal...wonderful place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2014

Located on historic Sonoma Square, where restaurants and wine tasting rooms abound, is where we found this quiet and intimate cafe. Our nephew, a local, highly recommended the Harvest Moon and I must say, he did not steer us wrong. The menu rotates daily, the wine list is great, and the service is beyond spectacular. I had some of the creamiest and tastiest risotto that I ever had...and it's a favorite so I order it wherever we travelt. My husband had the ribeye and managed to finish it off, all the while casting his eyes heavenward and humming Mmmmmm. Check out the menu when you are in town. If it sounds good, it will be great. Enjoy!
