“Quick look back into history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2014

If you are touring the mission, check this place out also. It's included in the admission and you can quickly step back into history and catch a glimpse of what it was like in Sonoma before tourism and air conditioning. There is a video to explain what you see and some interesting artifacts, too.

“Review of Chapel and Fort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2014

The Spanish life in California was interesting. The effect on the Native Americans and the fact they put up very little resistance gives insight into the lifestyle which seems laid back.

“Nice History”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2014

A restored Army barracks from early 1800's. I enjoyed looking at the layout of the room, period furnishings, and how it was constructed. And, it is free.

“History of Sonoma”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2014

The Sonoma Barracks give a great insight into the lives of the early settlers of the city of Sonoma, and how it developed into what we see today. A must see,

“Good for a quick morning visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2014

We wandered into the Sonoma Barracks around 9:30 am, although its official opening hour is 10 am. There were no staff there to guide us, but they have an informative DVD shown on loop in one of the rooms. We wandered throughout the barracks which is quiet small - just one large room with a historical exhibit of old equipment. There is a second floor but there is nothing there. It just provides a view of the Sonoma Plaza from a second floor perspective. I believe the two park staff were at the Mission which was why we were able to wander around in the morning without paying admission. It took us only about 10 minutes to wander through the barracks. I would not pay any admission to just come here, but since the $3 includes other areas that's fine. The barracks is located on an adjacent street close to the Mission right at the plaza - hard to miss.
