“Delicious food from beginning to end”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

We thoroughly enjoyed everything we had. There were four of us and everyone got something different. I do have to say the truffle risotto with crab was the winner...amazing!! After the appetizer was served, there was a large gap of time before the main course arrived but it was all delicious! We would go back.

“Never Disappoints”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

This very simple setting, in a small shopping mall with Sonona Market, hides a gem of an Italian restaurant. I have never eaten anything less than scrumptious there. I try to make myself try the specials, but I so adore the eggplant parmesan that that is hard. If the chef has made vitello tonnate, jump on it!! Superb. The fish dishes are always wonderful as well. Very good selection of Italian wines at very reasonable prices. The chef and his front of the house spouse are starting cooking classes in Italy this year, so be on the lookout.

Visitors to Sonome should ramble off the square a night and try this fabulous Italian restaurant frequented mostly by locals!

“Excellent basic italian food, leans southern”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

This is out of the way in a strip mall, but don't let that detract you. This is a good italian restaurant with several southern italian entrees.

We showed up 45 minutes early because we were in the area and hoping to be seated early. No such luck; the place was packed. There really is no place to wait - they have a small bar with three seats by the door. But that was ok - the waitress brought us bread, offered us wine and kept checking on us.

Ahh, the food. One guy cooks in the back and he works his rear off. I had gnocchi. Honestly, it was the best I've ever had outside of our family's homemade gnocchi. These were potato gnocchi. The key to a good gnocchi is not to have them too hard. They should be soft. These were perfect - nice and soft in a tomato sauce that was heaven. A very simple dish bursting with flavor.

We split a plate of ravoili. Al dente and good. Basic, simple, but delish.

Everyone else loved their food. Our friends had the Spaghetti carbonara and the spaghetti Bolognaise. Both perfectly executed with a balance of flavors. No dumps of too rich meat sauce here. Just a perfect blend of what each dish should be.

For dessert, we got a homemade tart. It was fabulous, too. Not too sweet or sugary.

Also worth mentioning was the house wine. $21 a bottle and probably the best wine I've had for $21 at a restaurant.

The service can be slow and the place is a little cramped. But don't let that detract you. This is a mom and pop place. They work hard. You will be rewarded with a great meal and friendly service.

“The food is spectacular”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

Sonoma has several wonderful Italian restaurants, but Mama Tonino's is the best, by far. The food is wonderful. I love Bolognaisse sauce, and Mama's is among the very best I've ever had. My wife has an eggplant dish and was very, very pleased. The prices are very fair. We visit Sonoma every year and I only wish that we'd known about this place sooner.
