Simple but important.

California history explained in simple terms. Boys will understand and girls will appreciate the displays shown.

Located just a block off the Sonoma Square is the St. Francis Solano Mission. It is the last mission built in a series of missions that start at the border of Mexico and continue up California. There are a lot of historical things to see and learn about right at the corner where the mission is located. I like the chapel. It is a serene place with a lot of natural beauty. A special mass is held at the mission chapel that you don't want to miss if you are in town during the Christmas holiday.

We learned a surprising amount about the history of California at this conveniently located site in the center of Sonoma. We also recommend visiting the barracks and tourist center next door. The fee is minimal.

Every elementary fifth grader doing a California mission project should see this place and Vallejo's quarters also on Sonoma Square. When I was a room parent the mission offered candle making from tallow, basket making and weaving as done at the mission when it was established ..kids loved it!

Our family travels every year to one or two missions. This is the last one built and not much of the original mission is still standing. The informational billboards and pictures are excellent there just aren't much original artifacts. Worth the $3 if you are in town.
