This lovely area just a few blocks from the town square but feels miles away gives you a chance to walk off eating and drinking in town. Beautiful views of the valley and surrounding mountains. Take sturdy walking shoes.

Up until a year ago, we lived in Napa, but almost weekly treks to Sonoma to have breakfast and hike up the Sonoma Overlook Trail, which is just the right amount of challenging to get the heart rate up, but easy enough for all ages. There are plenty of stops along the way to enjoy progress views and, once on top, a bench to rest and reflect. We start from the parking lot and end in the cemetery. If we have the time, we continue on the Montini Trail. We now live in Sonoma and can take advantage of these backyard trails throughout the week.

Close to Sonoma Plaza, Montini and Overlook Trail is a well developed system of interconnected trails and it is an easy hike once the hill part is behind. Walk through a mature California oak woodland with outstanding views of Sonoma Valley and the City of Sonoma. Montini Open Space is north of downtown Sonoma, and the Overlook Trail is just east of 1st St West and north of the cemetery. There are two entry points for the Montana side and one for the Overlook Trail (they are connected above by the Rattle Snake Cutoff trail that crosses Norboom Rd, the extension of 1st St W). The east entrance to Montini is from the Field of Dreams parking lot just north of the Sonoma Police department off of 1st St W. The trail head and parking for the Overlook Trail is a little further up 1 St W on the right. My favorite route is to park at the west entry to Montini on 4th St W neat Montini Way (plenty of shady street parking) and then to cross over to the Overland Trail, coming down next to the Cemetery. You can then walk down 1st St W to the Sonoma Bike path and take that back to 4th St W and head north to where you parked.

This is a fairly easy trail. The steepest part is the first 25 yards, and they aren't bad a all. For the most part, the trail is well-tended, thought there are areas that are uneven, and some with somewhat loose rocks. But it is worth it...the views from the higher spots are fantastic. The total hike is about 3 miles.
The park is not far from the square in Sonoma, and offers parking for maybe 10 cars.

The trail starts and ends at the local cemetery - which is the bright, airy type. The hike is pleasant and easy (simple sneakers will do) with shady trees at some spots and various scenic stops where you get better & better views of the town. We encountered a young deer along the way up and it just watched us curiously.
