The ground of Buena Vista Winery are absolutely beautiful. The walkways were cobblestone. There was a great picnic area with tables and umbrella. Even a fountain. Walking up to the main buildings, there are placards giving visitors the history of the place and people, which was informative.

Inside, this winery has the usual merchandise, and something I'd never seen at another winery. A smelling wall. There's samples of floral, food, and other scents when you stick your nose close to a little tube and squeeze a bulb. Then you get a breath of raspberry, strawberry, and other scents. Interesting.

Hand down, the service was the best. Our bartender, Beatrice, was more than awesome. She guided us through the wines. My favorite was the bottle in the picture with the sheriff's badge on it. Best of all, I came in a little nauseous from a previous visit to another winery on an empty stomach. Beatrice was a saint and offered me the other half of her personal lunch sandwich after I asked if they sold food or snacks. That was one of the kindest gestures I've ever received as a weary traveler. Thanks, Beatrice!

Be sure to make a stop here if you are in the area. The wine is excellent, staff is friendly and the scenery is lovely. My boyfriend and I made plans ahead of time by scheduling a tour with a barrel tasting (highly recommended and costs about $30 per person) for our first day of the trip. We almost missed the tour when our flight arrived hours later than expected, but when we contacted them to see if it was even worth going still since we would miss their last tour of the day, the staff encouraged us to stop by and promised a good time. We ended up having a great time. We were given a special tour and allowed to taste a few of their wines from the barrel. Overall, it was fantastic.

I don't know why this article says Glen Ellen when the winery is actually in Sonoma. Anyway this is a great way to beat the tourist traps in Napa where you can be stuck in bumper to bumper traffic all day. Sonoma itself is much more more rustic and a better place to visit.

The central city square is apparently the biggest in California and is historic since it is where the California Republic was declared in 1846. The square is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and historic buildings such as the Spanish army barracks and the northernmost California mission.

The Buena Vista winery is a about a mile from the center of Sonoma. You reach it by going down Old Winery Road which is surrounded by eucalyptus trees. The winery itself was built in 1857 and is surrounded by woods. There is a wine tasting center and places to have a picnic outside.

Buena Vista is iconic with its caves and lovely European style buildings - it looks like you expect a winery to look.
We splurged a little to have a tour with the Count, an excellent story teller and re-enactor who also knew quite a bit about wine. All of the staff were friendly, knowledgable and enthusiastic about the new owner who has put millions into restoration of this facility. Picnics on the grounds are encouraged and we would definitely return to do that and sample more wines.
