we're very happy with this resort because they showcased the beauty of Surigao well, and the staff is great! too bad it wasn't maintained well due to lack of funds or it wouldve been excellent because all the facilities are there -just not functional. i've seen a lot of places & stayed in many hotels and resorts but this is still one of my favorites. the poor maintainance is not enough to stop us from appreciating this.

if you want serious relaxation -that is, peace and quiet, away from the phone & internet & all the busy-ness, want fresh seafood cooked especially for you, fall in love with nature, sip fresh coconut milk while enjoying the breeze, and feel like time suddenly slowed down -this is the place to go. no nightlife to force you to bed early and early to rise. no phone & internet to take your attention away from the beauty of the world, eat fresh & simple food -on time. so what if there's no heater & the jacuzzi was freezing, we can get that in the city but here we rather soak at the beach which we did not need to share with anyone else.

we wish you be able to bounce back Club Tara. we will definately go back!

Let me put it this way: We're happy that we got a Groupon rate or we'd have been majorly disappointed.

Although the resort advertises itself as a 5-star resort, after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, we weren't expecting much. Although Club Tara looks great on the website (and from afar, the waterfront cottages look great), up close it is poorly maintained. Too bad because the potential is there. It almost feels like the owners ran out of money to continue renovating.

When we arrived, the drain at the shower was clogged. We had to ask someone to fix it. The shower head was also a little clogged and the bathroom fixtures weren't that clean. The balcony opened up to the sea (and this was a nice touch) but the lights at the balcony weren't working so we couldn't hang out there at night. A TV in the room would have also been a nice touch.

Just to give you an idea how poorly maintained it was, there is a broken "speedboat" right beside our cottage. It is dilapidated and rusting but it is just there. There is also a rusty "yacht" just sitting there. When we asked, we were told that it would have been a bar but it was not finished. Furthermore, the pool (which they advertise heavily) was not available. They say the pump is broken. So if you really want to use the pool, make sure you call ahead and verify that it is already fixed.

We were delighted, however, with the staff. Alvin cooks great home-cooked meals (but if you're expecting 5-star buffet food, you'll be disappointed) and Eugene was so helpful. This place has so much potential and I am hoping they fix it.

Room Tip: Get the jacuzzi cottages. They aren't great but compared to all the other rooms, they are probab...

Overall, id say that this is a good one-time experience and ill probably come back when a real 5-star hotel puts up shop in the area.

They advertised this place as a 5-star hotel, but unfortunately, its a bit of a lie.

The only commendable thing about the hotel was the staff. They were very nice indeed. The cook (alvin i think is his name) makes wonderful, thoroughly enjoyable dishes. The staff are very thoughtful and very willing to help and show you around.

The place all around the hotel truly is stunning. It has some really great potential. Naturally formed lagoons and small beaches everywhere you go. You can use any non motorized equipment for free. We went kayaking and snorkeling. The water is pristine and the corals are so healthy and beautiful (unlike in other places ive been to).

However, it wouldve been nice if they kept the rooms as beautiful as the surroundings. All the tools are there already, it just really needs some major polishing of some sort. Here's a list of the things that can still be improved on:
1. Cigarette butts from the pots should be cleaned up before the next guest arrives
2. The bathroom should have a proper door
3. The bathroom fixtures should be cleaned up thoroughly.. There was some gunk on the tub when we got there, plus the fixtures were already corroding and rusting
4. The shower area should be cleaned up, better yet renovated. Replace the bamboo with something that doesnt look yucky.
5. When we were about to sleep, we had to kill 3 cockroaches beforehand (how many more could there be)
6. No one should be made to sleep on the floor. We booked a room good for 4, and they just provide mattresses placed on the floor for the extra 2 pax.

When we left they were already starting to renovate the place, so I hope they get it right so that they can properly claim a 5-star status.

This beach resort is not really a 5 star resort as they have advertised in the Internet. It's more of a 3 star one. We contacted the owner via their website at the hotel and there is no problem with the booking. It is a 7-8 hour trip from Davao City. The parking area at he Hayangbon pier is safe and fees for overnight parking is only 100 pesos. However we were disappointed with the private boat that fetched us. I was expecting a bigger one and at least with life vests ( we sakes the owner twice if it's big and if they have life vests and they told us they have, but my husband wants to be sure so he brought 2 vests for my 2 kids) and it didn't have one on it's very tiny boat which was almost full with 6 of us in the boat. It's a 45 min trip to the resort. Anyway, the boatman is very kind and assisted us with our belongings. The trip was very smooth and when we saw the island and the resort, it looks really good. The island is like an oasis for nature trippers. The villas are tropical and private and far apart from each other and you would really have your own space. The pool is also okay and child friendly. Maybe, I was expecting too much from this resort, so I was a little bit disappointed. The rooms needs repair, not child friendly, because there are no rails in the balcony and if you have a child or toddler, you have to be extra vigilant because he might fall straight to the deep blue sea. The comfort room also don't have privacy because there are no doors, so I have to be extra vigilant when I use it and my kids might go inside. No tv or DVD in our room because there are only 5 sets for the entire resort and there are 10 villas. Isn't that a little bit sloppy, no tea or coffee maker also in our room. The water is salty and not good for our hair and complexion he he. The trash can is too small, the jacuzzi is ot working and the hot and cold features in the bathroom is also faulty.
The food is only so-so, I was expecting a buffet meals but it's only home cooked and what you will typically eat at you're home. It's a good thing I brought canned goods because my little kid doesn't like their food. He funny thing is I asked the owner if they have restaurant that serves food 24 hours, he said yes, bit you cant basically order because they cook only your meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also said in their website, free use of the yacht, but it's actually a rundown yacht on display at land and very rusty, I wouldn't dream of entering it and I might get infected. Bring your own umbrellas, because the restaurant is far from the villas and you will get wet, they should have provided for their guests. I was expecting first class service because I paid good money, but I got a third class service hu hu hu. Anyway, the plus side, is the staff, Alvin, Roy,Ian and denden, was good, they made up for the negative side of this hotel. Hey were very accommodating, granted our requests, toured us at sohoton caves, island hopping and denden made sure my 2 kids are safe and guided them at sohoton and even swam with them and dived for the fallen snorkel of my child. If you also like to unwind and be in touch with nature with no internet and cellphones (the signal is poor) you might want to go here. Tis is more for honeymooners. Thank you so much.
I have toured all over, and always am choosy with my hotels, even if I pay extra money, it ok with me as long as I get the best service, but I feel shortchanged with my service here at club Tara and traveled 8 hours just go here so I was disappointed that I didn't get my value for

the money I paid. Will I go back here, probably not and still recommend it to my friends
because the island is nice, but will tell them the real score and not expect too much.
Bring lots of snacks, drinks, food, water even canned goods new use if you don't want their door you can ask them to cook another one for you. Alvin the cook is the best.

Room Tip: Just choose the water or tropical jacuzzi room ( the pricey one). They are offering huts at 2500 per...

NOT for divers, that being said although they do have a dive shop, there's no one there to operate it and the only one qualified to run it stays in the city and comes in only when there are a group of korean divers who have booked in advance.

Room:
The pics look nice on the website, but when you get there it's a step above basic. No hot water, aircon was too small for the room, the chrome on the bathroom fixtures were suffering salt water corrosion, water in the bathroom was a little less salty than the sea. Cleanliness was as clean as it could get on an island (don't expect spotless), I had to clean the aircon filter because the dust on there was thick like felt (I didn't mind cleaning it though)
The bed was a queen size matress, nice and thick. Sheets were clean and linens were changed daily. Although there's a tv in the room, there are no channels so you'll just have to borrow some of the dvd's they have at the front desk. With the ocean and stars outside, why bother watching tv anyway? I spend most of my out of water time on that balcony just listening to the waves and looking up at the stars. Ref had drinks in it like water, beer, a rum cooler and coke. The water is complimentary and and it's basically drink to your heart's content, we drank about 4-6 bottles of water each a day. Don't be grossed out by the free rubber sandals, just bring your own.

Facilities:
Dive shop isn't used often because the dive manager only goes there when there's a group of Korean divers so if you want to dive, go somewhere else.
Kayaks are free so you can kayak around the inlet (which I did to burn off my diving energy). Pool was empty when we were there, but I'm not a big fan of swimming pools when I can swim in the ocean.

Food:
Don't expect 5 star ala carte service. The dining here is home style, meaning you show up for meals and they serve you whatever they've prepared for that particular meal. If you're picky then you should stick to the tourist spots, this hotel is for travellers who like to roll with the situation and aren't nitpicky about stuff. Meals usually come with rice, 2 viands, fruit and juice. Alvin does a great job at cooking and giving us balanced meals...

Staff:
After spending 5 days at this resort, I felt like I was at home except I was on the beach. They leave you alone when you want to, and chat you up when you feel like it. They'll accomodate requests as best they can, but you have to remember you're on an island and the town is 20-30 mins away by boat.

Activities:
Kayaking, snorkelling, spelunking, watching big fruit bats, hiking... the guides were knowledgeable and always accommodating. I dropped my camera into the ocean near the shore and they thankfully dove in after it even though it was pretty deep. The nature reserve is amazing, all the islets provide protection from the strong currents of the open sea and the caves are still in pretty good shape. Crystal cave would be a great spelunking adventure, unfortunately we didn't have any equipment so we just went as far as the big cavern at the end of the "tourist" trail (there are ways down into the cavern but we just weren't in the right gear).

Value:
Good enough, because I used a groupon, however the Php 9000 I paid for the extra night ( around about $150-200) wasn't worth it for the room standard. I wouldn't mind going back if I got another deeply discounted rate and they get the dive shop running.

Overall:
Disappointed in the hotel itself, but Alvin, Roy-Roy, Pizarro, and the rest of the staff and guides made our stay enjoyable.
