“A little gem - great bargain!”
Reviewed November 10, 2009

We were looking for an inexpensive but centrally located hotel in Solvang. We stumbled upon this place online and based on past reviews, thought it would be just fine. The motel is certainly past it's prime and is showing its age, but it is very neat and clean and right on the main street of Solvang. By no means is it a 5 star hotel and if you are looking for lots of bells and whistles, this is not for you. But, if you want to be in a great location in Solvang and able to walk to shopping and restaurants, we highly recommend the Hamlet Motel. Bring your own shampoo and hair dryer as they are not provided. We had a corner room in this L-shaped motel and it was reasonably quiet other than some truck noise early in the morning. Complimentary vouchers were provided for coffee and rolls at a wonderful little bakery across the street as there is no dining room or eating area at this motel. We were charged an AAA rate of $55/nite for a room with a queen sized bed. Would highly recommend this hotel for those of you looking for a budget priced hotel in Solvang.

We returned yesterday from Solvang, having spent three nights at the Hamlet Motel. I was a bit apprehensive, as the room rates were so low. Wow, was I surprised! The location is perfect and parking is easy. All the rooms are very clean, well-maintained and quiet. The bed was VERY comfortable and hot water was in abundance. I always bring my own pillows, this time not being an exception, and didn't realize until we got home last night that I LEFT THEM IN THE ROOM! My husband contacted Anthony, who quickly promised to mail them back to us AT NO CHARGE! I call this excellent service, and will definitely be a guest of the Hamlet in the future.

Solvang is adorable, like going back in time to a Danish mini-world. I don’t think Walt Disney could do it better, with bakeries, wineries and so many shops a fortune could be spent and several thousand calories consumed in just a few hours. Beware everything closes really early; we could not find a restaurant and ended up at the mini-market with cold sandwich and a bag of chips for dinner. The town closes up by 8pm on week days.
We found a coupon in the Travel Coupon Guide at one of the rest stops…so off to Solvang we went. Best rate was $59.00 at the Hamlet Motel but the discount rates for others were around $65.00, so we had several options. We were tired and rolling into town about 9pm so we didn’t check out any of the others, we just went for the rate. We had our choice of 2 rooms; one upstairs and one down, the clerk gave us keys to check them out. First of all it’s cute, so the rooms are nicely furnished, nothing extravagant, but nice enough. The tiny room upstairs was appealing to us because it was so tiny and cute, but we were not up to hauling our suit cases up the narrow stairs after another long day of driving. So we picked room 3, but the rate was now $65.00, okay so what, we thought the king bed was worth it the rate hike of $5.00.
The bed was actually really uncomfortable like sleeping on bubble wrap every time you moved the springs popped and crackled under our weight. The large flat screen on the wall was nice to just veg-out with so we fell asleep with not a sound other than our springs to sing to us. By 7am every thing was a buzz…the TRAFFIC and slamming doors, voices…all woke us up a bit too early. So first we go for coffee…no coffee maker, but we did get a free beverage and Danish coupon from the office, from across the street so I got up to shower and go get us some coffee.
Freaking shower was either HOT or FREEZING no warm…my husband even tried to help me, thinking it must be my mush brain that couldn’t find the sweet spot on the shower thing. Yeah, he had a pretty scalding to icy shower too. We were very awake without the coffee. LOL
The bakery did the trick and we finished up our business and are ready to find a real breakfast….if I can keep myself from eating all the sweets.
At the Hamlet…there is no WIFI or coffee, no toiletries so bring your own. If you need to shop rates, there were lots of vacancy signs even in July, the town is very quiet and safe feeling so just about any lodging would do, so don’t fear going in and asking for a discount. If we are here again, I will go for a newer hotel with a better bed, coffee and maybe some sound proof walls, and I would not feel ashamed to ask for a discount.

Dear Letsgo2c,

We apologize for the inconveniences you experienced during your stay with us.
Just to let you know, we do have free wireless internet available. Since we do not have breakfast available on-site, we give all of our guests a voucher for a free coffee and pastry from the bakery across the street. For future guests with hot/cold water problems, please alert the front desk right away so that we can ensure the water temperatures are normal. Having to take a really cold/hot shower is unacceptable...we do apologize for your bad experience with this. We will also keep the mattress in mind, as it is very important that our guests receive a good nights sleep.
Thank you again for letting us know about these issues you had during your stay. We are always striving to make our place better and our guests happier!

We booked in with a coupon and were pleasantly surprised by the size of our room. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was across the road and was a coffee and a pastry so that was fine.

My wife and I stayed here on a recent trip to Solvang and had a great time. The room was perfect for our trip. It's no four or five star resort where you might never want to leave your room, but the whole point of visiting Solvang is to get out of the room, see the town and the nearby Santa Ynez Valley!!! The rooms are definitely much nicer than the normal motel room (see the pictures). The rooms are a nice size, though the bathroom is a bit small and my wife wanted to point out to the ladies reading that the rooms apparently don't have hair dryers. That said, we paid $65/night midweek and that included coupons for breakfast (coffee and pastry) from Olsen's Bakery across the street. We felt it was an amazing value. The Hamlet is located in walking distance to most everything in Solvang and a short drive to the many wineries. We'll be back!!

This is a motel with near hotel-type amenities. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of our room. All the furniture and bedding seemed new, nice bathroom fixtures, a flat screen TV... The gentleman at the front desk was very friendly and sweet, even though we checked in over 2 hours later than our expected arrival time. :)

The only negatives were the old, odd green carpet (a remnant of shabbier times?), as well, the walls were pretty thin. We could hear people walking up and down the stairs and talking outside our room as if they were in the room with us.

But overall, a good experience for the value. I would definitely stay here again.
