If you're spending a day of your holiday driving down (or up) the Pacific Coast Highway, make sure to include a daytime stop at Solvang, a weird Danish town in the middle of Southern California, complete with brightly painted wooden buildings and windmills. It's a gorgeous and heavily pedestrianised spot with loads of free parking and a great opportunity to stretch your legs.

Then stop by the "Arne's Famous Aebleskiver" window at the Solvang Restaurant. You get three of these traditional Danish treats for just a few dollars and they're ideal for sharing between two of you - kind of like really thick, round pancakes doused liberally in sugar and jam. Very unique food in a very charming place located literally minutes from the main route to/from LA / San Francisco.

These were great. Reminded me of when we were in Danmark. They were warm and had lots of Rasberry jam on them. Great

I had the sampler and yum! Worth it! The waitress was friendly and helpful. The ice tea brewed and yummy. If you get a chance to taste the mustard, do. It is from the owner's mother's recipe.

We were just passing through Solvang so we wanted to try a couple of the unique local eateries and found this one met our expectations. Food and service was fine, prices were reasonable. Got abelskivers, which are a MUST-have treat in this town, and enjoyed the special treat, kind of ball-shaped pancake. We also got a the variety platter with different sandwiches of roast beef, cheese, etc, was nice. Decor is charming and it just felt like the kind of restaurant you would want to visit in this kind of city. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for lunch and/or if you only have time to visit just one or two restaurants to visit in this town.

Wanted to savour authentic European cuisine and was not disappointed...

The sausage & meats were succulent, juicy and could not get enough... The pastries were out-of-this-world...

And with the ambiance, it was an excellent quiet and friendly atmosphere to have lunch.
