If you're spending a day of your holiday driving down (or up) the Pacific Coast Highway, make sure to include a daytime stop at Solvang, a weird Danish town in the middle of Southern California, complete with brightly painted wooden buildings and windmills. It's a gorgeous and heavily pedestrianised spot with loads of free parking and a great opportunity to stretch your legs.
Then stop by the "Arne's Famous Aebleskiver" window at the Solvang Restaurant. You get three of these traditional Danish treats for just a few dollars and they're ideal for sharing between two of you - kind of like really thick, round pancakes doused liberally in sugar and jam. Very unique food in a very charming place located literally minutes from the main route to/from LA / San Francisco.
