“Hidden Gem in Solvang”
Reviewed January 7, 2010

We stayed Sept. 15 & 16, 2009 in Room 18 (the English Ivy Room) at Solvang Gardens. They have a terrific website for viewing the location of the rooms/getting info about them and making reservations. We found the rates to be reasonable and comparable to other lodging in the area. We had no trouble finding the Lodge and were instantly glad we had avoided the "chain" hotels and selected Solvang Gardens. It is a lovely setting, just far enough away from the busy downtown area, but easily within walking distance of downtown. We were warmly welcomed and check in was very quick. Our room was HUGE and it felt like we had our own little Danish cottage (complete with designated parking space). The room had a comfy king size bed with nice linens, desk and chair, couch, coffee table, chest with TV and a great electric fireplace. Plenty of closet space. The large bathroom had a separate toilet area and a nice tub/shower combo and large sink area. (There were some cobwebs in the tub and spider webs on the lights....not a problem, I just wiped them away and assumed the room had not been occupied in a while). Good shower...lots of hot water and nice towels. Housekeeping was fine while we visited. We were pleased to find that the windows to the room would open (nice fresh air in the evenings) and we thorougly enjoyed the lovely gardens (picked and ate apples). The complimentary continental breakfast was adequate (cereal and danish/juice/tea/coffee). We took ours back to our room. Breakfast room is cozy, but you can take it to your room or eat in the garden...plenty of tables/chairs for seating outdoors. We did experience some minor street noise one night and a street sweeper truck cleaning the street one morning (entrance to English borders a side residential street), but this was not a big deal and we quickly fell back to sleep. We met the owner and his daughter....they handled our check-out, which was also very efficient. The story of the owner's acquisition of Solvang Gardens Lodge is wonderful (they live in the house at the rear) and we found it to be a quiet, lovely oasis in Solvang. We highly recommend Solvang Gardens.

This motel is good if you plan on spending most your time outside the hotel. The rooms are clean but very small. The breakfast in the morning is some cereal or danishes (the kind from Costco). The gardens are gorgeous. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They directed us to local wineries and great restaurants.

Pleasant hotel with lovely garden (as implied by the name). Pricy. Spa attached, but no fitness centre. Complimentary breakfast (not much room to eat it) that is minimal but sufficient. Room clean. A bit of noise from those staying above, but not too problematic. room was dark. Access to computer and free broadband which was unique on our whole holiday.

wonderful staff! we were worried about the fires in nearby santa maria and called a couple of times. the person who answered was very cheerful and polite. when we got there, we were greeted by michelle who is extraordinary. very gracious, very helpful and made us feel very welcome! she made us feel like friends - and definitely set the tone for a lovely stay!

we were in the cymbidium room which was very spacious - the place was bigger than some of the apts i've lived in! didn't get to use the fireplace (it is summer after all!), but what a nice touch! brought our continental breakfast back to our room and ate on the dining table which was set up for 4, but could easily have accommodated 6. there is a full kitchen to use, including cups and plates and utensils.

for those of you rv''ing - we were easily able to park our rv on the street parking alongside the hotel. since it is a couple of blocks off the main area, parking was a breeze!

we ate at "root 246", a new restaurant in town (which michelle kindly recommended) and it was excellent! i have never been overly impressed with the food in solvang, but i found this place to be beautiful to the eye, service to be extraordinarily attentive, and the food to be inventive and delicious! try the pluot sorbet and warm sugar cookie - what a fabulous way to finish off the great meal!

by the way, check out their website, which i understand has been recently upgraded. it has really nice pictures of each of the rooms. since each one is different, it really helps!

downside to the place? that we had to leave the next day and get on the road! we highly recommend this establishment!

We arrived and found the beds to be very poor quality (think motel 6). I let them know my wife has a back injury and we wouldn't be able to stay. The owner arrived and informed me angrily that that was the only bedroom the had available and that they had already run my card and "We don't do refunds."

There are plenty of nice places to stay in the area, but this isn't one of them. Don't let the exterior fool you, the interiors are very shoddy and the staff quite rude.

solvanggardens, Front desk manager at Solvang Gardens, responded to this review, October 22, 2009
After empathizing with the guest about his wife's bad back, I assured him that guests always remark on how our quality beds provide a wonderful night's rest. He asked to test the bed and after touching the bed with his hand, he said that the bed would not work for his wife. We returned to the office and the owners offered to put a mattress pad on the bed. He refused and asked to get a refund. On the previous day, when he booked the room, the owner explicitly told him that the room rate would be charged that evening and that it was nonrefundable. He agreed.

We focus on our guests needs in order to provide a memorable stay with reasons to return in the future. And we make our beds a priority.

This little place is centrally located (as in 2 blocks away from it "all") but off the beaten track. We had a small room with a queen bed. It was decorated nicely, as many B & Bs are, with a lot of flowery things, and had a nice, newly re-done bathroom. The nicest thing was our "back door," which led to the most exquisite garden! It was a large, grassy area with little tables and chairs placed in different areas and fountains. It was also very quiet. We thought it was a lovely place to stay and will most likely return because it was clean, comfortable, well-situated and the right price.

We stayed there recently with two other couples and enjoyed being attended to by Paul, his wife and staff. We went to Solvang to cycle and Paul is also a cyclist so he could provide excellent restaurant recommendations and route suggestions. He also offered bike storage so we didn't have to keep bikes in our rooms.

Our room was recently updated, as are most, and included a lux new bathroom, a very comfortable bed and microwave, sink and fridge. The complimentary breakfast of danish pastries, fruit, dry cereal, juices and coffee is very nice. There is a computer in the breakfast area as well as free wi-fi in all rooms. The gardens, front and rear, are very nice spots to relax outdoors. Solvang Gardens Lodge is a winner!
