We stayed Sept. 15 & 16, 2009 in Room 18 (the English Ivy Room) at Solvang Gardens. They have a terrific website for viewing the location of the rooms/getting info about them and making reservations. We found the rates to be reasonable and comparable to other lodging in the area. We had no trouble finding the Lodge and were instantly glad we had avoided the "chain" hotels and selected Solvang Gardens. It is a lovely setting, just far enough away from the busy downtown area, but easily within walking distance of downtown. We were warmly welcomed and check in was very quick. Our room was HUGE and it felt like we had our own little Danish cottage (complete with designated parking space). The room had a comfy king size bed with nice linens, desk and chair, couch, coffee table, chest with TV and a great electric fireplace. Plenty of closet space. The large bathroom had a separate toilet area and a nice tub/shower combo and large sink area. (There were some cobwebs in the tub and spider webs on the lights....not a problem, I just wiped them away and assumed the room had not been occupied in a while). Good shower...lots of hot water and nice towels. Housekeeping was fine while we visited. We were pleased to find that the windows to the room would open (nice fresh air in the evenings) and we thorougly enjoyed the lovely gardens (picked and ate apples). The complimentary continental breakfast was adequate (cereal and danish/juice/tea/coffee). We took ours back to our room. Breakfast room is cozy, but you can take it to your room or eat in the garden...plenty of tables/chairs for seating outdoors. We did experience some minor street noise one night and a street sweeper truck cleaning the street one morning (entrance to English borders a side residential street), but this was not a big deal and we quickly fell back to sleep. We met the owner and his daughter....they handled our check-out, which was also very efficient. The story of the owner's acquisition of Solvang Gardens Lodge is wonderful (they live in the house at the rear) and we found it to be a quiet, lovely oasis in Solvang. We highly recommend Solvang Gardens.
