Outstanding production. Dress warmly at night and take a blanket! We had great seats in the center section. I like the theater in the round. They always do a great job in their plays.

“Theater under the stars”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2013

Had an enjoyable time at the Solvang Festival Theater. Our play was Fiddler on the roof. Excellent performances at this small venue theater. There really are no bad seats in the theater.

It can get cool in the theater even on a warm early summer day. In the evening dress accordingly or bring blankets!

Went to local performance of dance company, as always a great show. It is an open air theater so you need to bring warm clothes and bankets.

“Spectacular Shows!”

See marvelous theater in an outdoor theatre! It's amazing that a local community college (Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria) provides such a high level of theater!! A MUST see!!!!!

“Professional performances under the stars”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

Summer theater, put on by the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts at the Solvang Festival Theater, is one of the joys of living here, a true jewel in the Valley crown. Always professional, usually outstanding, often amazing, Solvang's theatre under the stars has delighted audiences since 1974, when townspeople and contractors rallied to construct a 700 seat playhouse modeled after Shakespeare's Globe in just a matter of months. Overall, it's nicer than the now reconstructed Globe, set on the banks of the Thames in an iffy London neighborhood, because Theaterfest has an enchanting park-like reception area as well, perfect for intermission mingling and wine tasting. Plus you don't get mugged walking home.
At Allan Hancock College's training program in Santa Maria, the only one of its kind in the US offered by a community college, PCPA students tackle a rigorous two year curriculum, taught by a resident company of professional actors, directors, designers, musical directors, choreographers and technicians. Alumni include Robin Williams.
My own all-time favorite play here was Hamlet, starring Daniel Davis. A riveting performance, and the outdoor setting was perfect - a chill mist swept the theatre as if on cue when the ghost arrived. Hamlet aficionados called it one of the best ever, anywhere. Women threw roses to the intense star. Theater professionals were awed.
My brother Bert, former editor of the SYV News, now editor of the award winning Cambrian, tells this story: "As a student at Stanford's overseas campus at Cliveden House, west of London, I took a class in history of theater design. The professor had a long career designing theatrical productions, complemented by stints as a teacher. As part of the class, we were to attend two productions of Hamlet, one produced by avant garde actor/director Steven Berkoff and the other by the Royal Shakespeare Company. On the bus ride into London to see the play, somehow the subject of favorite productions of Hamlet came up."
"I've seen hundreds," said the prof. "But the best I ever saw was in a little town called Solvang, on California's Central Coast." Alan Fletcher, then head of American Conservatory Theatre's training program, directed that amazing 1979 production. When you go, dress warm. Locals bring blankets. It's nippy after nightfall.
