Located right in town, within walking distance of most hotels / restaurants this place is a real gem. Its a small theater, so every seat has a great view. We attended the Summer PCPA Theaterfest show and it was excellent. Good sound quality, nice seating and top quality actors. Prior to the show, you are allowed to bring in food and drink (pick up a nice bottle of local wine) and use their area under the trees (plenty of tables and chairs), or grab a snack at their reaonably priced snack bar.

Once each, this past summer and last, my family has seen a musical play at this charming amphitheater in the heart of Solvang. Last year was Jason Robert Brown's SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD; this past August, it was LEGALLY BLONDE. In each case, the production was quite good, excellent production values for the size stage and audience, and outstanding talent. Naturally, one should not expect well-known "stars" for this venue but you can expect a very enjoyable night of theatre.

The venue itself is a nicely sized, open air theater laid out in a semi-circle about 1/3 around a circular stage, with a few hundred seats, all with unobstructed views in a "stadium" rising. On a warm summer evening, it is comfortable but on a cooler night, it can get chilly. All of the regulars bring blankets and cushions but they also rent those on site. There is also a snack bar that sells wine, coffee and snacks, and a nice grass area for picnics prior to the show.

Tickets are reasonable and available for advance purchase at the website for the theater. My impression is that the majority of the audience are "locals" but there are also many visitors. All are greeted by friendly ticket-takers and ushers.

It seems as if the theater presents a mixture of Broadway-type musicals, classic/period plays and maybe a Shakespeare or two. If you love live theatre or just need something to do when Solvang closes down for the night, I highly recommend the Solvang Festival Theatre.
