Our first experience with Root 246 was very delightful. We knew that it was an upscale establishment and made our reservations (recommended) in anticipation of a special meal. We were not disappointed. The kitchen focuses on themes using fresh local ingredients and tonight it was blood orange and Cara orange that was the thread through my meal. We started with the 5 piece cheese plate appetizer that was accompanied with local honey and a house made blood orange jam. Our entrees were the surf and turf - a creative mix of pan seared scallops topped with a blood orange foam and a very tender boneless braised beef short rib- and the braised lamb shank on top of fresh local mushroom risotto. Both dishes were excellent in preparation, presentation, flavor, and portion. For dessert we chose the home made ice cream spoon sampler - a very nice sample of each of the house's six flavors - and the Cara orange sorbet. Both desserts were very refreshing and satisfying without being heavy.
The service was solid being very attentive without overbearing. The atmosphere is not elegant but more country club casual which is good as this is Solvang after all. To that point, attire of country club casual (polo shirt, sweater or jacket and slacks) seems to be fitting for the occasion. It's a nice place and worthy of dressing up a bit.
Prices for this quality were very fair. We have spent as much or more on far less.
The Root 246 creative menu, excellent preparation and solid service made our first experience here a memorable one. This was not just dinner but a gourmet event to be savored.
