Our first experience with Root 246 was very delightful. We knew that it was an upscale establishment and made our reservations (recommended) in anticipation of a special meal. We were not disappointed. The kitchen focuses on themes using fresh local ingredients and tonight it was blood orange and Cara orange that was the thread through my meal. We started with the 5 piece cheese plate appetizer that was accompanied with local honey and a house made blood orange jam. Our entrees were the surf and turf - a creative mix of pan seared scallops topped with a blood orange foam and a very tender boneless braised beef short rib- and the braised lamb shank on top of fresh local mushroom risotto. Both dishes were excellent in preparation, presentation, flavor, and portion. For dessert we chose the home made ice cream spoon sampler - a very nice sample of each of the house's six flavors - and the Cara orange sorbet. Both desserts were very refreshing and satisfying without being heavy.

The service was solid being very attentive without overbearing. The atmosphere is not elegant but more country club casual which is good as this is Solvang after all. To that point, attire of country club casual (polo shirt, sweater or jacket and slacks) seems to be fitting for the occasion. It's a nice place and worthy of dressing up a bit.

Prices for this quality were very fair. We have spent as much or more on far less.

The Root 246 creative menu, excellent preparation and solid service made our first experience here a memorable one. This was not just dinner but a gourmet event to be savored.

We found Root 246 through the excellent reviews on Yelp and we were not disappointed! Both my husband and I had the fried chicken and it was divine. The mashed potatoes were to die for and the desserts (we had the ice cream sampler and the banana split sampler) were spectacular.

The prices are a little expensive, but you are paying for the atmosphere, too, which is trendy, sleek and modern. In the bar area there are about six tables with six high backed chairs at each that create a nice private table without the need for a private room (we didn't get a chance to sit at these, but they looked nice). There is a substantial patio area out front that looked like a great place to socialize and enjoy a glass of wine and appetizers (it was raining when we went so there wasn't anyone out there).

I am looking forward to the next time we're in Solvang so we can make reservations again!

Highly recommend reservations, especially on Saturday night.

Traveling on Valentine's Day we booked this restaurant based on web reviews and weren't disappointed. The restaurant has an outdoor patio that's well heated for cold snaps. The interior is very sophisticated- upholstered armchairs, stacked stone fireplace opposite the main bar, soft creams and espresso wood abound. Very comfortable, certainly no jeans but it doesn't feel too stuffy or formal either. We ordered off their Prix Fixe menu for the holiday. We had the choice of ordering with or without wine pairings. I chose without. The selections were perfectly prepared and romantically described. A kumomoto oyster with passion fruit ice and schezwan peppercorn vinaigrette for starter, blue cheese souffle and petite lambs tongue lettuce with citrus segments, red pepper sorbet for intermezzo, glazed pheasant with bacon froth, chestnut spaetzle and shaved brussel sprouts in cream. It sounds ambitious but it was absolutely perfect in every way. Dessert was a trio- a flourless chocolate cake, raspberry jelly with coconut foam, and orange fizzy water with raspberries. All presentations were mouth watering to look at. Service was plentiful right down to a obtaining a signed menu. All tucked away in Solvang. Need I say more? Don't just drive through. Stop and eat.

We enjoy Bradley Ogden's cuisine in our occasional trips to Las Vegas. So it was very pleasant to discover that we could enjoy it without the long drive. My short rib and my wife's lamb shank were both perfectly prepared, and the prices are very reasonable for this quality.
