“Tranquillity and Continuity”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2011

Founded in 1804 and going strong. Beautiful location. The Franciscan missionaries always chose places in small towns but on sites where spirituality could be nurtured. See photo.

“Small Old California Mission, worth a stop if you've never seen one”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2010

Sitting at the western edge of Solvang, on a nice piece of property with good views and great parking, this small Old California mission is worth a stop if you are driving by or have never seen a mission before. Everybody should see one, at least. It contains a chuch, still in use, a courtyard, now only 1/3 of it's original size. In the old days it was huge, as a diorama shows, an industrial space for crafts, as well as a market and meeting place. Small museum with some nice artifacts, including a very unusual painting of the Madonna and Child with the Madonna wearing Spanish court dress of the period, with her hair unveiled and dressed in contemporary court style. Gift shop focuses on nativity items, catholic books, bibles, rosaries. Everyone very friendly. There is an audio tour, which I skipped because I know basic mission dynamics.

“A peaceful break from eating & shopping...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2010

A nice place to stop when you need a break from eating and shopping in Solvang. Pretty grounds - don't miss the view from the area in front of the mission, the walk of crosses, and the gardens. Typical gift shop. A bonus for us visiting on a Sunday was to see mass in progress...seemed like we took a step back in time.

“Gorgeous.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2010

The Old Mission Santa Ines is the first California mission I have seen but definitely won't be the last. It is restored to its original splendor. The gardens are very nice. There are two free parking lots to access the Mission. One is on Alisal Road and the other is in the back of the Mission. The view from the parking lot in the back is a magnificent one of the mountains and ranches of the area. If you ask me, I could probably just skip the touristy hubbub of the Danish shops and restaurants and just gaze upon the beautiful ranches, mountains and mission.
