We were disappointed in the foods, service and it was over priced.

We had bought a $40-for-food-for-$20 for Nobu, and were surprised to learn that we were not going to the Gaslamp. Turns out that the Solana Beach Nobu is a family business that has been in place for twenty years. Despite the coupon, the service was excellent, although the server's English was a bit rocky. We had a rainbow roll, 3 orders of nigiri sushi, 1 order of shrimp-vegetable tempura, and 1 large beer for 2, for $24 (originally $44). The prices were in line with, but the portions a bit smaller than' other sushi places (not Gaslamp Nobu!) in the San Diego area. The restaurant and bar is huge, decorated in what I would call a Las Vegas notion of Japan, and a bit worn in places. We then went to the local beach, which was awesome.

I treavel a lot, and get to eat sushi in many places (including several of the "other" Nobu restaurants in other cities, and recently in several cities in Japan). For my taste, this is some of the best sushi ANYWHERE.

TIPS: Eat at the sushi bar, and try to sit with Nobu or Yagi. These are the best artists of the buch, and watching your sushi being made is a treat.

Try the chef's recommendations for fresh sushi (especially special hamachi and toro, if they have it). Let them know you are interested in what they recommend as the best, but don't be afraid to let them know if there are things you don't like.

Be aware that some of the specials can be pricey (Lobster dynamite, steamed black cod) but also are deliucious.

I love this place. If you go, sit with Yagi. The fish is always delicious and fresh, consistently good. A word of caution - this is a sole proprietorship (owned by a guy, not a corporation) and as such, the dining room I think was probably decorated by Nobu's wife (definately not a professional interior designer.) Also, if you want a massive amount of food with a mayonaisse sauce on top, this is not your place. Just fresh fish.

Nobu is overpriced and portions are very small. Good quality but just down the street is Station Sushi which is infinitely better.
