“A place to sleep.”
Reviewed June 12, 2006

The hotel is suipposedly right by the beach, but I'm not really sure where the beach was. I never saw it. Of course, it was June Gloom so we didn't really look for it. The room was nice, though, and free breakfast is always a plus! It was also really nice to be out of SD, but still be near enough to go do everything. And Del Mar is a neat little town with some good restaurants.

Being a block from the beach at a hotel where every room has a balcony, we expected a view from our room. Wrong! Our view was of the roof of the Alamo/National Car Rental office next door. Condos block any views and the small public beach that's a block away is reachable only by a long, steep set of stairs. A computer in the breakfast room is available for guests at a price. There's a per-minute Internet access charge and printing charge. The airhandler on the roof kept my husband awake in our 3rd floor room. A move to the 2nd floor solved the problem. A guest laundry is a nice perk. The breakfast room is large, but could use a couple more tables. The pool is small. The furniture in our room was falling apart and wiring (maybe computer cables) dangled from the ceiling. The staff was friendly and responsive. The rooms were clean. Two excellent restaurants are within a short walking distance -- Pacific Coast Grill and Parioli. We used this as our base for San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, La Jolla and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. It's a 20-minute drive to San Diego if there's no traffic on I-5.

I booked this hotel for a group (15 rooms) Thanksgiving weekend and was a little nervous about taking such a risk; however, we were all very pleased and our expectations were met. The location is fabulous - the Pacific coast is a block away with great restaurants and a wonderful marketplace shopping area within a mile from the hotel. The rooms were clean, had nice conveniences and were spacious. Look for Paul (at reception) who is extremely customer-service driven and has a wonderful, interpersonal style about him.

IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO STAY IN A ROOM, DON'T STAY HERE! They lost our reservation and our credit card info. Even after I double check the reservation! I asked if they had everything the needed (in person), and and that we would check in later in the day. Then proceeded to say they didn't have a reservation from us at 6:00 pm. They claimed they did nothing wrong and never promised anything. Said the reservation claim meant nothing. NIGHTMARE!!!!!! To make it worse they walked out of the room when we were still talking. And this was management. We had no place to stay and had to shack up with 4 people in our friends room at another location. BEWARE THIS PLACE!

We stayed in a non-smoking room, but the room was filled with a cigarette stench almost consistently throughout the night. It was extremely noisy from about 2 to 4:30 a.m. The bathtub faucet leaked all night. The sign in the room says that they care about their guests, and that if any part of your stay is not right, they will make that part of your stay up to you. Well, after complaining about the problems in the room, we were told that all they could do was to refund $8 of the room price. Grrrr! I would NEVER stay here again, and would never recommend it to anyone. Oh, the beds were comfortable, but with all of the noise and stenches, SKIP THIS ONE!

Not only did the manager lose my reservation BUT this was absolutely the most disgusting hotel I have ever stayed at...I could not sleep because of how gross the room was. The cleaning people need to be replaced - it was awful! Dirty, sticky food on the hotel guides, dirty bathroom, an AC unit that falls off the wall. YUCK YUCK YUCK!
