My wife and I have owned a one-bedroom timeshare unit at Sand Pebbles for twenty years. Even though we own units at other timeshare resorts, we always come once a year to vacation at Sand Pebbles. The recently-refurbished units are modern, clean and -- with the exception of the too-soft mattress on the bed -- a comfortable way to spend a week near the beach. Hopefully the HOA board will soon replace the mattresses with a higher quality product. The swimming pool and the Jacuzzi spa are fun places to lounge and meet other guests. Yes, the resort lacks amenities common to more upscale "real" resorts, such as in-unit laundry facilities or on-site activities other than the swimming pool and gas-fired barbecues. Since the resort only includes 40 or so units, the number of staff are fewer than would be found at larger, more-commercial resorts. Even so, the grounds are beautifully maintained and the housekeeping staff does a great job when they do their mid-week cleanings.

Sand Pebbles is conveniently located close to San Diego and other nearby regional tourist attractions, including LegoLand, San Diego Wild Animal Park, Del Mar race track and San Diego Old Town. There are numerous restaurants -- including Thai, Italian, steak, American contemporary, seafood, and breakfast cafes -- located within walking distance. A farmers' market opens every Saturday in the adjacent Cedros shopping district. Yes, although the beach is a two-minute walk from the back side of the resort, you must descend a long flight of stairs to reach the beach. You want a flat walk to the beach? Then walk 10 minutes north to Fletcher's Cove. Remember the old saying, "You get what you pay for?" In the case of Sand Pebbles, you get a lot... "Traveling the world one meal at a time..."

Room Tip: When making reservations, ask for a room at the back of the resort, away from Highway 101 traffic...

NOTE: look at the Sand Pebbles Resort website to see accurate photos. The photos currently displayed on TripAdvisor are NOT showing Sand Pebbles as it is now, or as it was last time we stayed there five years ago.

San Diego area hotel prices are high, as are resort prices near the better beaches in Orange County and North San Diego County. In this context, Sand Pebbles is a hidden gem. It's not a resort that sports golf and tennis courts, kids camps, waterslides, etc. As some have noted, the basic layout feels like a condo complex or (when you're at the pool) like a NICE motel...but how many motels have 1 and 2 bedroom suites? Sand Pebbles certainly feels less crowded than, and better than, the nicest Marriott Residence Inns, and the 2 bedroom townhouse units (as well as the 2 bedroom units that are only on the top floor) are HUGE!!!!

We stayed there a few years ago before they renovated, and we felt it was a good value back then. Now they've been totally transformed with stylish furnishings, so we far prefer staying at Sand Pebbles (for what it costs us) than the nearby hotels or larger resorts in Carlsbad, etc. Solana Beach/Del Mar have more of a small-town but upscale beach town feel than the more urban Carlsbad, with greater convenience to San Diego. We'd choose Sand Pebbles over areas like Mission Bay or Hotel Circle any time of year, even during rare bad weather when the beach is of less interest. (Locals know that Sept is a great time to visit the coast, and this was true for us this Sept!)

Stayed here for a week in July on a timeshare exchange. We had a 2BR & it was extremely roomy. The room was recently remodeled. It was clean & the beds were comfortable. The resort is relatively small, with a pool & spa in the center. We didn't use many ammenities other than the pool & spa a few nights. We did a lot of sight seeing while in the area, visiting San Diego is very easy & great beaches nearby.

It is a nice resort, with mostly repeat owners. Doesn't seem to be many people that trade into it. We were from the East Coast & found it to be a great location for beaching & trips to San Diego. You will need a car, there are many restaurants & shops nearby.

Our unit was close to the road and I found the traffic a little bit annoying in the morning hours but learned to live with it. It got me up early to start my day. We had a 2nd floor unit with a balcony which was nice for coffee in the morning or wine in the evening. Free Wi-Fi was a plus.

San Pebbles is in a great location. Close to the Del Mar Race Track, shopping, restaurants and the beach. Stayed there for the 2nd year in a row and will return. Contrary to one of the review I read, I thought the office staff was very nice and accomodating.

We stayed at the Sand Pebbles resort in June 2012 (the pictures above are not related to this resort). The reception is a little hole in the wall. The lady at reception was very loud and overbearing, giving us instructions on what to do and not to do in the resort. The brochures describe the property as being a resort, which it is not, it is apartments with a pool and jaccuzi and some barbeque facilities.

The apartment was far inferior to any other "resort" we have stayed in during our holiday. But had the basic necessities for making coffee, tea etc. There was no washing machine and tumble dryer in the unit, so you have to walk down stairs with the washing to use the coin operated machines. The reception is not open 24 hours, so you need to check their closing time in the event that you may need something.

The design of our two bedroomed unit was very cramped and my daughter could not close her bedroom door as the bed was in the way. There is a shower and toilet only, which is tiny, but funcitonal. There is no aircon in the unit, only fans, and it was exceptionally hot, so it was a bit unpleasant. There is also a train track nearby so in the evenings you can hear the train continually going by.

They advertise this as a beach resort, but the beach is not close at all as it is a few blocks away and a large number of steps to walk down to the beach. You would need transport when staying here as not much is close by.

Overall we did not really enjoy our stay at this property and would not return.
