“We liked Ice Lake Lodge and will return”
Reviewed January 30, 2009

I had low expectations going to Ice Lakes Lodge based on the reviews on Trip Advisor, so maybe that's why I found that I was delighted with the property - it was much nicer than described! We arrived on a rainy/snowy afternoon and hurried into the lobby where a cheerful fire was warming the people sitting on comfy sofas drinking tea or wine. The place has a feeling of newness, as the pine accessories (door frames, etc.) looked like they had just been installed. The rooms are set in a 2 story circle around the lobby, allowing you to look down upon the lobby from the upstairs rooms.

The first room we were given wasn't as cheerful as the lobby -- it was large, but looked over the parking lot. We asked to be switched to one overlooking the frozen lake, as we had been promised. That room was much better, brighter and had a better feel to it, although the manager warned us that the couple who had been there before complained about the noise from the kids in the room next door. We could see (or rather hear) what they meant just before dinner. As noted in other reviews, the walls really are paper-thin and we could hear every squeal and laugh and comment of the kids next door. We finally knocked on the wall and they were quiet(er). We were concerned about sleeping, but they must have been tuckered out because we didn't hear a sound that night.

Anyway....the lodge is located truly steps from the Royal Gorge cross country ski resort, where you could pick up a trail on the other side of the parking lot. It was beautiful -- and if it hadn't been such a wet snow, we would have gone for it. Instead, though, we had a late lunch (very good) and dinner later (excellent). Try the pork with dried cherries.

They bill breakfast as continental, but they added bacon to the mix. The pastries were first rate -- like the ones I've had at places like the Four Seasons.

We're planning on coming back, with friends, to try out the cross country skiing and will be happy to return to Ice Lakes Lodge.

My girlfriend and I went for the New Year. We stayed in a downstairs room which was small and spare. The walls are paper thin allowing us to hear every word spoken in the room next door.

On the plus side the location can't be beat for cross country skiing which is right out the door. The bartender Earl makes a world class Bloody Mary. And the Hanger steak is delicious.

Stark best describes the rooms at this facility. The seting is magnificent and the lodge itself is nice. The rooms are small, modestly appointed. The 13 inch TV was tough to see from the bed. The remote was held together by duct tape.

There's no AC, fans, or ice machine. It kind of reminds me of camp with a private bath and king size bed. Staff is warm and friendly, although there's no bell service, room service, food available after 8pm.

We booked a room here for two nights on labor day weekend. We were charged $165 a night (with taxes) and drove home the second day rather than spend another night there. The rooms weren't too bad, just worn out and cramped, nothing special at all. Tiny television set sitting on a desk with a built in VCR. Very thin walls and ceilings, you can hear when someone above gets out of bed, walks across the room and flushes the toilet.

Our room faced the lake and our son loved that, and there were a lot of kids playing ball on the small beach and snorkeling in the water. The place wasn't so awful that we just had to leave, we just preferred to wake up home in SF where we could get a better night's sleep.

The rooms reminded me of a cheap tahoe hotel, and I LOVE cheap Tahoe motels during ski season - but only when I'm paying the cheap motel prices. I'm so bummed we paid ahead for two nights, we would definitely not stay there again.

  • Liked — The view of the lake, the family friendy vibe
  • Disliked — The noise, the boring rooms
  • Tips/Secrets — Get a room on the top floor if you don't want to hear crying babies at night, they seem to book the familes on the bottom floor.

The setting for the lodge is gorgeous, and the lodge itself is very nice looking. I stayed with my 2 year old (my husband was sick and could not come as planned). I had all of the gear a 2 year old requires and the person at the front desk did not offer to help in any way (not even to hold the door) as I struggled with several loads and a child who wanted to be held. The person did not even look up from what she was doing.

The rooms are very starkly appointed....and it was cold. The guest guide states that the rooms are heated to 68 degrees and specifically says to NOT touch the thermostat....even though it read 60 degrees.

The lack of hospitality put me in a more critical frame of mind than I otherwise would have been....I would not stay here again.

A beautiful location, a lovely lake, but the hotel leaves much to be desired. Service is terrible, waited so long for service at the hotel restaurant that we finally left (as did several other parties). The rooms are small and clean, but you can hear every noise in the hotel from the room. Unfortunately for us, there was no sleep until the bar downstairs closed at 2am. Staff on the phone was surprisingly rude and unhelpful and I was disappointed that such a lovely location really misses its true potential. We'll be staying elsewhere this year.

Just stayed over July 4 weekend. As stated in the other reviews, the lodge offers a very pretty view of Serene Lake. It has a small beach area on the lake. However, the beach is not a private beach and we had all sorts of people from the community sitting there. The rooms are done in a pine wood motif and are minimally furnished: There is not a dresser or bureau to place your clothes in, only a shelf in an open closet with cheap wire hangers. On top of this, the walls are paper thin. We were on the top floor and could hear every word of the people in the room next to us. (they weren't shouting-just talking!). It was as if they were in the room with us. Look elsewhere!
