Tony and Evelyn have created an amazing and very causal experience at the Junkyard Cafe in Simi Valley. The decor is, well, junkyard, with everything from old car parts to machinery, to you name it.

The food is what I call regular American - an upgrade from diner food, but the same idea. Tony is Italian, and his sauces are excellent. The eclectic menu is in three-ring binders, is hand written, and contains the food, plus some inspirational quotes. There is a daily "poison" - special for each meal. The staff is generally young and friendly. There is a full bar and a large catering facility.

The food is tasty and the portions are very large. Salads come in large metal mixing bowls with a plate underneath. Sandwiches are large and come of the homemade foccacia bread.

Beer is served in schooners, everything else in LARGE glasses. The atmosphere is convivial, and talking to the folks at other tables is OK here. The 17th of every month is St. Patrick's Day with corned beef and cabbage and bagpipes and more. Other special events are commemorated on a semi-regular basis.

It is a uniquely Simi Valley experience! If you're not in a good mood when you get there, will likely will be when you leave.

The concept is a cute idea but it is too junky and is trashy. Food is not flavorful. Too greasy. Grease rags used as napkins are not impressive. Hate all the mannequin parts. Just not an ambience I enjoy at all.

Most restaurants in Simi aren't very interesting, but this one is. It has atmosphere - sort of. Located on the end of a shopping center, The Junkyard Cafe is different, in mostly good ways. It has a lot of free parking in the back (where the entrance is). The dining room is large but seems quite dark when you first enter. The entire restaurant and bar are decorated with - well - junk. I expect the original Friday's may have looked something like this. But there was a lot of creative thought that went into the decor. Some of it just made me laugh out loud. Go to the restroom for even more entertainment. Hold your ears when someone is celebrating a birthday. They start their birthday procession with a gong! The menu appears to be handwritten pages in an old notebook. Take your time reading it and don't let the prompt service keep you from taking the time to explore it. I chose a cheeseburger with onion rings on the side. This was less impressive than I'd hoped. the 6 oz burger was charbroiled, but pressed flat enough that there was no chance of getting it cooked medium rare, or even medium (I was never asked how I wanted it cooked). And the grade wan't the best either. It was OK. The onion rings were the breaded kind, and only slightly better than Burger King. If you like the breaded kind, you might like these - I didn't. The price was fair so all in all, I expect to go back some day to study the menu more and read more of the wall in the rest room. But I'm not sure if I like it yet.

This place is really fun for cheap, unusual lunch or dinner. The menu is so long, so extensive that you could spend days pouring over it. We had $1 tacos and pizza slices during happy hour, hanburgers, appetizer platters. I had a terrific BBQ tri tip sand which which was really yummy. My second time here when visiting a family member in Simi

There is one for each meal time; breakfast, lunch, dinner, and it is a three ring binder! Friends met for dinner once, and nearly everything is fried and loaded with calories! Not too many "healthy" choices here, folks, and the portions are large. Went again for Brunch ~ loved it! Many healthy choices - steal cut oats, veggie filled omlets, etc. The cooks are totally open to substitutions, so ask! Wait staff very attentive and friendly! It is relaxed, roomy and casual. For Brunch, the Bloody Marys are to die for! Mimosas and champagne are flowing! I checked" average," as the next rating would be "very good." Overall, it is GOOD.
