Tony and Evelyn have created an amazing and very causal experience at the Junkyard Cafe in Simi Valley. The decor is, well, junkyard, with everything from old car parts to machinery, to you name it.
The food is what I call regular American - an upgrade from diner food, but the same idea. Tony is Italian, and his sauces are excellent. The eclectic menu is in three-ring binders, is hand written, and contains the food, plus some inspirational quotes. There is a daily "poison" - special for each meal. The staff is generally young and friendly. There is a full bar and a large catering facility.
The food is tasty and the portions are very large. Salads come in large metal mixing bowls with a plate underneath. Sandwiches are large and come of the homemade foccacia bread.
Beer is served in schooners, everything else in LARGE glasses. The atmosphere is convivial, and talking to the folks at other tables is OK here. The 17th of every month is St. Patrick's Day with corned beef and cabbage and bagpipes and more. Other special events are commemorated on a semi-regular basis.
It is a uniquely Simi Valley experience! If you're not in a good mood when you get there, will likely will be when you leave.
