Embassy Suites by Hilton Hotel Monterey Bay - Seaside
Ranked #2 of 13 Hotels in Seaside
Reviewed July 12, 2012 via mobile

We spent one night in Monterey on our trip through the Central Coast. The Embassy Suites are always a hit with us (family of 5).
After our drive from SLO up HWY 1 we were very warmly greater at the hotel by the front desk staff. We enjoyed the managers reception then headed into Monterey for dinner. The drive to Cannery Row is quick and easy.
The room was clean and spacious and the beds were comfortable.
The breakfast was the standard fair, always kept fresh and tables are quickly bussed. The wait for the omlettes is worth it!
Staying in Monterey is not cheap and this property is in line with the area and parking is free and if you got to the aquarium you can park downtown and take the trolley to save a few bucks.
Staying in the talest building in the area with views of the ocean does have its advantages.

Recently stayed at the Embassy Suites Monterey California to attend a wedding. Although located in Seaside, it's just a short drive down Del Monte Blvd to Fisherman's Wharf. We checked in early and was pleasantly greeted by the front desk staff. Check in was smooth and our room on the 7th floor was ready. The room was spacious and clean. No complaints here. The elevators to get to the rooms and back to the ground floor is another matter. There is only 3 elevators to handle 225 rooms on 12 floors. The wait time for an elevator was anywhere from 1 minute to 10 minutes depending on how full they were (most of time very full, had to wait for next elevator). This was very frustrating. The morning breakfast and the Manager's reception were outstanding. We would definitely stay here again when visiting Monterey area.

We were upgraded to a oceanview room, which had a great view.Hilton Honors members receive free water, soda and snacks from the front desk, which is a nice touch. The location is very good with easy access to Hwy 1 to get to Carmel. The Hotel is right on the border with Monterey on Del Monte Ave, which leads to the Wharf and historic district. With only three slow elevators and large crowds, the wait in the morning and during cocktail hour can be long. The breakfast is OK only if you stand in line for the custom cooked eggs - don't eat the eggs in the buffet - cold and tasteless. The hotel hosts large crowds of families, which can make things very hectic, but that's to be expected at an Embassy Suites in a vacation area.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor oceanview if you don't mind long waits for the elevator. The views are grea...

This is your average Embassy Suites. With free parking, breakfast, roominess of suites and room pricing it represents a good value for staying in the Monterey area. The down sides are that the maintence on the property is only fair. The fitness room is large and well equipped but not all the equipment was maintained and working. Running on the beach beats the treadmill anyway. The hotel charges an internet access fee PER DEVICE so between laptop, iphone and the same with family members, you can rack up a bill. There can be a backup at the elevators. Breakfast is included in room cost, saves time and hassle, but is basic. Large convenient parking lot and several blocks from a grocery store. Overall it was a reasonable value but could have been better.

We asked to be on a high floor and they did put us on the highest floor possible. The rooms were dated but nice and big with a seperate sitting area and fridge, sink etc.
Bathroom was a good size and nice toileteries. Bed was comfortable and there was a good view. Breakfast buffet was a very low standard. You could get an omlette made for you which was good, but the buffet had such a poor selection of hot food and cereal and off fruit.

We recently spent two nights at the Embassy in Seaside and left feeling impressed by some aspects of our stay -- and very disappointed by others.

Pros:
* Free breakfast. The free breakfast at the Embassy Suites was absolutely fantastic. The selection included fruit (watermelon, pineapple, and cantaloupe), eggs, yogurt, fried potatoes, sausage, bacon, pancakes, cereal, oatmeal, and baked goods. The real star of the show, however, was the omelet bar, where omelets (and plain eggs) were cooked to order. The wait in the omelet line, however, was 5-10 minutes.
* Common areas. The facilities themselves are impressive; a 12-story atrium fills the center of the hotel, with the rooms arranged on the outside. Outside of the breakfast area during breakfast time, there was plenty of space to sit and talk with friends. Because of the atrium architecture, however, the sound does carry.
* Location. The Embassy Suites is within easy walking distance to a McDonald's, a Starbucks, and a Chili's, and is a short drive from attractions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Dennis the Menace Park.

Cons:
* Dampness. We arrived shortly before sunset on a day that was chilly, overcast, and misty (at least near the ocean -- we could see where the clouds disappeared further inland), and a pervasive feeling of dampness filled the hotel. The carpets in the room were slightly soggy and the air was extremely humid. It didn't help that the common areas of the hotel were freezing -- perhaps a side effect of the atrium architecture. The next two days were sunnier and warmer, and conditions inside improved a little, but the feeling of dampness never left.
* Shower water pressure. The shower water pressure was the worst that I've experienced at any hotel. There was plenty of water pressure through the bathtub tap, but once you switched from tap to shower, the water sort of weakly misted around you. Very disappointing when you're already a bit cold and uncomfortable.
* Prices. We paid a little more than $200/night for a king bedroom suite. For what you're getting, this is one expensive hotel.

Many other things about the Embassy Suites were acceptable. The rooms were an ok size and clean enough, if you ignored a few deep-set stains; the pool was a hit with the kids; and service was reasonably responsive, if not particularly friendly (I should point out that there was some excellent service from the breakfast staff).

We didn't have a bad stay and could be persuaded to stay here again, but there are definitely more economical options in the area. I would suggest two quick fixes that would have bumped my review up a star: (1) offer free coffee/tea in the lobby area -- a hot drink would have helped relieve a bit of the chill, and since there's already coffee/tea bags in the rooms, you're just making this amenity more easily-accessible to guests; and (2) fix the shower water pressure issue -- I know you're saving water and money with the low-pressure shower head, but there's low pressure and no pressure, and you're falling dangerously close to the latter.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for sharing your comments in regards to your stay with us. Please know we are preparing to renovate our bathtubs and shower heads this year as well as the case goods. In particular, your comments in regards to complimentary coffee in the evening is a wonderful idea considering the often rapid temperature change as mentioned. Thank you for staying with us and we hope to see you again in the future.
Sincerely,
Myron M.
